Is Coconut Oil Actually Good For Your Skin?

Written By:

Karen Young Chester

Coconut oil has been a staple ingredient in many skin care and beauty routines for years, and for good reason: It is a natural moisturizer, offers antibacterial properties and can help protect the skin from environmental damage that accelerates the signs of aging. A versatile fat packed with skin-loving properties, it can work wonders on a dry and flaky complexion. Although its raw form can be comedogenic and clog pores, coconut oil used for skin care is formulated to be beneficial to the skin. Read on for the three ways coconut oil helps the complexion and could be the perfect ingredient for your daily skin care routine.

3 Benefits For The SkinCoconut Product Picks

3 Benefits Of Coconut For The Skin

1. Coconut Oil Kills Bacteria

Coconut oil contains lauric acid, caprylic acid and capric acid. These fatty acids, especially lauric, have major anti-viral and antimicrobial properties that can kill off harmful bacteria and are beneficial for acne-prone skin. It should be noted that although coconut oil possesses antibacterial properties, it should not be considered as a replacement for professional medical treatment for bacterial infections.

2. Coconut Oil Provides Antioxidants

Rich in antioxidants like Vitamin E, coconut oil can delay the visible signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant known to protect skin cells from damage caused by environmental stressors, such as UV rays. Coconut oil is also rich in polyphenols, a group of antioxidants commonly found in plant-based foods. Polyphenols are known for their ability to reduce inflammation and protect against cellular damage. By incorporating coconut oil into your skin care routine, you may be able to protect your skin from premature aging and preserve a healthy, youthful complexion.

3. Coconut Oil Replenishes Moisture

Coconut oil has emollient properties that replenish moisture, soothe the skin and strengthen the skin’s barrier to lock in moisture. As dermatologist Jane Wu explains, coconut oil may reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL), the process of water evaporating from your skin and causing a dry, flaky complexion. If you tend to have dry skin, coconut oil could help you reduce the amount of moisture lost by the skin.

How To Unclog Your Pores

A mature woman looking in the mirror

How To Unclog Your Pores

Written By:

Karen Young Chester

When you think of clogs, your mind may wander to drains and sinks but — while faulty plumbing may be alarming — we think there’s an even more distressing location for blockage: your pores. These tiny orifices on your skin can attract all types of debris, leading to clogged pores. But how exactly do you get rid of clogged pores? If you’re ready to minimize the appearance of pores and unclog that buildup, here’s our guide to combat your congested pores once and for all.

What Are Clogged Pores? | 3 Methods To Avoid | How To Unclog Your Pores | How To Shrink The Look Of Large Pores

What are clogged pores?

Clogged pores are small dots you see on your skin, which are actually the openings of hair follicles. When impurities settle on the skin, a nasty mixture of dead skin cells, pollution and oil can sink deep into these openings. Pores filled with debris can lead to blackheads, whiteheads and blemishes — blocked ducts that look dark on the surface. Blackheads are small, open pores that are filled with oil, dirt, and dead skin cells. They can look black because of the oxidation of these cells. You can spot blackheads on the face (especially the nose), but they can also appear on the back, chest, neck, and arms. In comparison, whiteheads are also caused by pores filled with dead skin cells, oil or dirt but these pores are closed rather than open. This buildup causes a whitehead to form on the skin, which is usually white or a light color. Whiteheads are often accompanied by other types of acne, such as blackheads, papules and pustules.

3 Methods To avoid

A close-up of skin pores.

Through specific skin care products and spa treatments, you can clear clogged pores effectively. But there are some trends that people use at home that cause more harm than good.

1. Pore Strips

When you suffer from clogged pores, it may be tempting to resort to options like pore strips, a strip of material with an adhesive that pulls out skin cells and blockage. However, many beauty experts don’t recommend these products for blackheads. "I'm always wary of pore strips because while they [may] be fun, you risk damaging the skin and thus, [making] your pores bigger," dermatologist Jennifer Herrmann, MD tells Byrdie. Herrmann explains, "Although they are marketed well, most aren't powerful enough to 'clean' pores."

These sticky strips may irritate your skin, leading to inflammation, especially for sensitive or rosacea-prone skin types. Although these strips may remove some surface debris, they could also worsen the problem by causing dirt and impurities to settle even deeper into the pores. Plus, the superficial action of pore strips removing skin cells means that perfectly healthy skin cells are ripped away along with dead skin cells.

2. Baking Soda

Baking soda to remove pores is a DIY method that has gained popularity but is ineffective in removing the buildup clogging your pores. By putting baking soda on your skin, you're adding on a product that generally irritates the skin. Baking soda can strip the skin’s natural barrier, leaving your skin dry, itchy or vulnerable to environmental stressors.

3. Lemon

Lemon is another ingredient that can really irritate your skin due to its acidity. Some people apply lemon to dry out their breakouts and hopefully unclog their pores, but lemon only leads to irritation, dryness and even increased sun damage.

How to unclog your pores

If pore strips aren’t the right choice for you, here are three Eminence Organics exfoliants we recommend using instead:

Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant

A favorite of stars like actress Thandiwe Newton, our Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant uses naturally occurring lactic and salicylic acids to deep clean your pores and remove dead skin cells. Chickpea flour and rice flour gently buff the surface of your complexion and absorb excess oil.

Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant Stone Crop Oxygenating Fizzofoliant™

Stone Crop Oxygenating Fizzofoliant

When you’re getting ready for a professional blackhead extraction from an Eminence Organics authorized spa, our Stone Crop Oxygenating Fizzofoliant is the exfoliant to turn to. Infused with stone crop, this powder-to-foam product is formulated for desincrustation, a treatment that softens sebum. Its light fizzing action softens the skin and prepares the complexion for a pore-clearing extraction. For even more effectiveness, you can also blend Stone Crop Oxygenating Fizzofoliant with our Citrus Exfoliating Wash for the ultimate deep clean.

Turmeric Energizing Treatment

If it’s a mask you’re looking for, try our pore-purging Turmeric Energizing Treatment. This treatment gently exfoliates to uncover soft, fresh-looking skin. Paprika invigorates the look of the skin, leaving it soft and glowing, while turmeric visibly brightens the skin's appearance and reduces the look of puffiness.

How To Shrink The Look Of Large Pores

If you're looking for a flawless complexion, shrinking the appearance of pores is an important step. Your skin type determines what the natural state of pores will look like. If you have oilier skin, the pores expand and have a larger appearance. If you have less oil, your skin's pores will barely be noticeable. You may also notice pores if you have congestion built up in your skin. Watch our Lead Skin Care Trainer, Natalie Pergar, as she explains why certain skin types suffer from large pores and what products you need to minimize large pores for healthy, smooth skin.

A Tropical Skin Care Routine To Target Dull, Rough Skin

Written By:

Thea Christie

If your skin is looking lackluster, it might be time to supercharge that glow. Our Tropical Superfood Collection offers a refreshing lineup of products that easily integrate into your current skin care routine and pair exfoliating PHA (polyhydroxy acid) with vitamin-rich botanicals to address dull and tired skin. Keep reading to find out how to renew and revitalize your complexion with next-generation formulas infused with acids and enzymes for gentle exfoliation and hydration.

A Facial Skin Care Routine | A Body Care Routine

Discover The Tropical Superfood Collection

Dull and tired-looking skin is often caused by dead skin cells building up on the surface of the skin, combined with an uneven skin tone. Fortunately, the Tropical Superfood Collection addresses these issues, harnessing gentle exfoliation as well as potent antioxidants blended with superfood botanicals. Introducing our three new Tropical Superfood essentials: the Pineapple Refining Tonique, the Superfood Booster-Powder and the Yuzu Solid Body Oil. Each formula in this collection enhances the skin with PHA and unique, next-gen superfood botanicals, including Kakadu plum, pineapple and camu camu. Together, this combination of key ingredients delivers the ultimate tropical experience and the look of healthy, glowing skin.

This collection:

  • Creates a bright, even-looking complexion by reducing the appearance of dark spots and clearing clogged pores.
  • Minimizes signs of uneven skin texture, leaving soft smooth skin.
  • Hydrates and resurfaces the skin for a renewed, youthful-looking complexion.
  • Boasts luscious and exotic sensorials that will transport you to the tropics!

Plus, these organic formulations are suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

A Facial Skin Care Routine

Here's how to incorporate these three products into a tropical facial skin care routine that leaves the complexion brighter and smoother-looking.

1. Cleanser

For your cleansing step, try the Mangosteen Daily Resurfacing Cleanser. This delicious-smelling cleanser contains lactic acid, a gentle alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) exfoliant that eliminates surface buildup and improves skin hydration for brighter, youthful-looking skin. It is formulated with mangosteen, which visibly enhances skin vitality and radiance.

How To Use

To apply, mix a small amount of product with water into your hands. In a circular motion, apply and massage gently with your fingertips while ensuring that you cover your face and neck. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Do not use on broken or abraded skin.

2. Toner

Next, apply the Pineapple Refining Tonique, a dual-action chemical and enzymatic tonique designed to gently exfoliate, visibly brighten and hydrate the skin. This exfoliating toner has a fresh pineapple scent and is formulated with PHA, enzymes (bromelain) and tranexamic acid. Working together, these ingredients team up to gently exfoliate and brighten the appearance of the skin. If you have sensitive skin, PHA is the exfoliating acid perfect for you. A non-irritating exfoliant, PHA targets the dryness associated with environmental stress while reducing the visible signs of aging. Because this acid focuses on surface-level penetration, sensitive skin types can apply this exfoliating ingredient without fear of irritation.

How To Use

After cleansing, apply an even layer onto the face and neck area with either your palms or a cotton round. Leave this on. Start with one application every other day and increase to daily use if you do not experience irritation.

3. Exfoliant

The Firm Skin Acai Exfoliating Peel leaves your skin looking firmer, more hydrated and feeling noticeably soft and smooth. This peel gently exfoliates using lactic and glycolic acids to renew a dull skin texture. It also creates firmer-looking skin thanks to a formula containing antioxidants sourced from acai berry, grapefruit and goji berry,

How To Use

Apply one to two pumps of the solution onto the dual-textured cotton round pads that are provided. Apply in circular motions ensuring you apply to your face and neck, avoiding the eye area. Leave it on.

4. Mask

You’ll love the Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Masque for visibly reducing the signs of fine lines and wrinkles. This cream-gel mask is formulated with Vitamins C and E to improve the appearance of the skin. This blend of tropical citrus fruits, leafy greens and avocado oil helps reduce the look of drying environmental stress as well as fine lines and wrinkles.

How To Use

Apply a small amount of the mask evenly over the entire face, neck and décolleté, if desired. Allow the mask to dry for five to ten minutes. Use a lukewarm face cloth in a circular motion to gently scrub off the mask and rinse thoroughly with clear water.

5. Essence (Optional)

If you feel like your skin has lost its natural radiance, or that you have a compromised skin barrier, an optional step in your routine is adding an essence such as the Kombucha Microbiome Balancing Essence. This essence is formulated with pre, pro* and postbiotics to enhance the skin’s glow, and primes the skin for all the products to follow in your skin care routine. You can learn more about pre, pro* and postbiotic skin care in this guide.

How To Use

Dispense a small amount of product in your hands or on a cotton pad and pat it onto cleansed and toned skin. Leave the essence on.

6. Serum

Tone and refresh the skin with the Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Serum. Boasting citrus fruits such as lemon and grapefruit, this lightweight serum helps protect your skin against the signs of aging, like wrinkles and fine lines. It also contains botanical ferulic acid, an effective antioxidant to help the skin appear bright, firm and plump.

How To Use

Apply three to four drops to your skin once or twice daily. Leave it on.

7. Eye Cream

De-puff tired eyes with the Hibiscus Ultra Lift Eye Cream. This eye cream smooths wrinkles and minimizes the appearance of dark undereye circles thanks to the inclusion of an ice wine active, caffeine and botanical peptides. You’re left with a smoother, more hydrated-looking eye area.

How To Use

Gently depress the finger trigger nozzle to dispense a small amount of product and use the cool stainless steel rollerball to gently massage the cream under the eye area in a circular, upwards sweeping motion. Use either once or twice daily on its own or under your favorite eye serum or cream. Leave it on.

8. Concentrate

Immediately refresh and revitalize dull skin with the Mangosteen Daily Resurfacing Concentrate. A Lactic Acid Complex consisting of a proprietary blend of actives gently resurfaces the skin and refines pores for a more radiant, silky and youthful-looking complexion.

How To Use

Apply one to two pumps to cleansed skin once or twice daily. Leave the product on.

9. Oil

The Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil firms and plumps the skin and provides deep hydration for all skin types. Infused with rosehip, jojoba and seabuckthorn oils, this luxurious facial oil provides essential fatty acids, antioxidants and vitamins to improve the look of elasticity and texture.

How To Use

Apply a thin layer of oil (2–3 drops) to the face and neck with circular motions once or twice daily. Leave on. This oil can be followed with a moisturizer.

10. Moisturizer & SPF

The tropical Coconut Age Corrective Moisturizer hydrates the skin thanks to coconut oil, coconut water and shea butter. A Natural Retinol Alternative Complex also gives the skin a lifted and tightened appearance. Follow with an SPF like our Lilikoi Mineral Defense Moisturizer SPF 40.

How To Use

Apply a layer of moisturizer over the entire face and neck area. Leave on. For a lighter application, emulsify a small amount of moisturizer in your hand with a few drops of water. For extra hydration, apply a thicker layer on dry areas. Follow with an SPF.

11. Add-In Boost

Blend the Superfood Booster Powder into your moisturizer before application. This fine powder mixes with a cream moisturizer to target uneven skin tone, brighten the complexion and reduce the appearance of dark spots. Rich in the superfood Kakadu plum, the powder delivers the fruit's Vitamin C antioxidants to the skin, helping minimize the look of dark spots.

As International Educator Brian Goodwin, says: “Vitamin C is crucial for achieving that coveted natural glow. The Superfood Booster-Powder is enhanced with Kakadu plum — an ultra-potent fruit that contains 30-50 times the Vitamin C found in oranges.”

How To Use

Using the dosing spoon provided, add one leveled scoop of powder to a cream moisturizer in the palm of your hand. Mix well. Apply to the face and neck 1–2 times daily. Leave it on.

12. Mist

After your skin care routine, refresh your complexion throughout the day with a spritz of mist. The antioxidant-rich Mangosteen Revitalizing Mist contains superfruit, which revitalizes the skin’s appearance. This mist also minimizes the look of environmental stress, improves skin tone and reduces the appearance of pores.

How To Use

Cleanse skin and apply one to two sprays onto the face and neck or apply with a cotton pad, avoiding the eye area. Leave the mist on. To refresh the complexion, you can re-apply anytime during the day.

Body wraps are spa treatments that involve applying a mixture of ingredients to the skin. The Client’s body is then covered with a wrap, usually made of plastic or cloth. The wrap is secured in place while the Client is left to relax for anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour. The treatment works by trapping heat, allowing the ingredients to penetrate deeply into the skin.

Benefits of Body Wraps

Hydrating And Moisturizing Benefits

One of the main benefits of body wraps is their ability to hydrate the skin. Dehydrated skin can look dull and feel rough to the touch, but body wraps can help restore moisture, leaving the skin feeling soft and smooth. In addition to hydrating ingredients, the heat generated by the wrap encourages pores to open up so that the skin can better absorb the moisture introduced by the body treatment.

Improving Skin Texture

Additionally, some types of body wraps are designed to gently exfoliate and remove dead skin cells, which revitalizes the look of dull skin and encourages new skin cells to come to the surface. These kinds of wraps can give the Client a smoother, more even-toned skin texture.

Exfoliating Benefits

You can provide Clients with smoother-looking skin by choosing body wrap products with exfoliating ingredients. A product with an exfoliating acid helps remove layers of dry, dead skin to reveal fresher, smoother-looking skin beneath. For product recommendations, explore the next section below.

Minimizing The Appearance Of Cellulite

Cellulite is a common concern for many people and body wraps can help reduce its appearance. The heat generated by a body wrap stimulates blood flow, which can help improve circulation and give the skin a smoother, firmer and tightened appearance.

Relaxation Benefits

The heat from a body wrap may help reduce a Client's stress by adding warmth to the muscles, which releases tension from the body. As the muscle tension leaves their body, this treatment method can be very soothing and comforting.

  • 1 wool blanket (to place on sheets)
  • 1 Mylar blanket (to place on top of the wool blanket)
  • 2 plastic body wrap sheets (to place on top of Mylar blanket)
  • 3 hot, wet bath towels (optional)

  • 1 spatula
  • 3 bowls
  • Warm water or tea

The amount of product used will depend on the Client and the area(s) to be treated.

Please note: No body lotions or body oils should be used prior to body wraps.

Step 1: Scrub

Using a circular motion, apply the Eminence Organics body scrub of choice to the entire body, working from the outer limbs toward the heart. Leave on.

Step 2: Wrap

Dispense 2 to 4 tablespoons of the body wrap of choice into a bowl and dilute with warm water or tea in a 1:1 ratio.

Wrap Application

  • Have the Client lay face up on the table with a modesty towel over the pelvic region and décolleté area.
  • Apply a thin layer of body wrap to each leg and wrap with a plastic sheet.
  • Help the Client sit up, holding the modesty towel with their arms across their chest, and apply a thin layer of body wrap to the back.
  • Wrap the remainder of the plastic sheet around the Client’s shoulders
  • For an add-on treatment option (optional): Place a hot, wet bath towel under the Client’s back for them to lie on.
  • Help the Client lie down on their back.
  • Apply a thin layer of body wrap to each arm, cross the arms across the chest again and wrap with a plastic sheet.
  • Add-on treatment option (optional): Lay a second hot wet bath towel over the Client’s upper body and a third over their legs.
  • Wrap the second plastic sheet around the Client (and hot towels, if used), followed by a Mylar blanket and finally a wool blanket.
  • Perform a 10–20 minute treatment during the body wrap (mini facial or neck, face, and scalp massage).

What Are AHAs, PHAs And BHAs?

What Are AHAs, PHAs And BHAs?

Written By:

Thea Christie

Just like us, you probably have a deep appreciation for acids due to their power to resurface and enhance the skin's natural glow. Exfoliating acids, such as AHAs and BHAs, have been a staple for those seeking to rejuvenate their skin by removing dead skin cells and revealing a brighter, more radiant complexion. These types of acids are among the most widely used exfoliants. But the new kid on the block is PHA, and it's been garnering attention for its ability to illuminate the skin without irritating those with sensitive, reactive skin. Keep reading to learn all about the differences between AHAs, PHAs and BHAs to determine which acid is most suited to your skin type.

What Are AHAs? | What Are PHAs? | What Are BHAs? | The Difference Between AHA, PHA & BHA

What Are AHAs, PHAs And BHAs?

One of the most effective ways to improve your skin’s radiance and smoothness is encouraging skin cell turnover to make way for new, younger cells. Dead skin cells that linger on the complexion leave skin looking dull. Ideally, your skin will naturally shed these cells but as we age, this natural process slows down, so our skin doesn’t renew itself as frequently. AHAs, PHAs and BHAs are exfoliating ingredients that work by breaking down the bonds that keep dead skin cells clinging to the skin’s surface, bringing out new, fresher-looking skin. You can find these ingredients in exfoliants as well as toners, cleansers and even body oils. But, what exactly is the difference between these three acids?

aha vs bha vs pha

What Are AHAs?

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) help with the skin's exfoliation process by breaking down the "glue" that holds dead skin cells to the surface, which encourages the cells to turn over more quickly. There are many different types of AHAs that you can use, depending on your needs. You may have heard of mandelic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, ferulic acid and more. Out of all these different types, lactic acid is the most gentle and hydrating of AHAs, meaning it is an excellent choice for most skin types and is less likely to cause irritation.

AHAs are water soluble, meaning they are unable to penetrate through the skin’s natural oils. As a result, AHAs are used for exfoliating the surface of the skin and target dryness, dullness and the signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles. You can read all about AHA in further detail here.

PHAs Explained

Polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) are gentle chemical acids that are related to AHAs. Common types of PHAs include gluconolactone and lactobionic acid. Similar to AHAs, PHAs are water soluble and do not penetrate the skin’s oils, meaning they exfoliate on the skin’s outer surface. However, PHAs are unique in that they offer a more gradual exfoliation which makes this acid non-irritating, even for sensitive skin types. There are no risks of harsh side effects like dryness or sensitivity.

As dermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban tells InStyle: "Even those with more sensitive skin or who are highly reactive can easily tolerate PHA more readily," says Dr. Shamban. "PHA products are also known to be safe for people with rosacea or some skin conditions like eczema, which is not possible with AHA and the BHA acid groups."

PHAs also exhibit a strong ability to protect from environmental stressors that cause dryness as well as visible signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles. PHAs help with hydration and smooth the skin, making it a suitable ingredient for dry skin types too.

What Are BHAs?

Similar to AHAs and PHAs, BHAs dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells on the skin's surface. However, unlike the other two acids, oil-soluble BHAs can penetrate more deeply to reach the oil glands and penetrate blocked pores. This acid can break down skin cell buildup that may trigger breakouts, making it ideal for acne-prone skin.

The most common BHA in the beauty world is salicylic acid, which reduces the likelihood of breakouts and keeps it looking blemish-free. BHAs can also address an uneven skin texture, fine lines and wrinkles.

The Difference Between AHAs, PHAs And BHAs

By using AHA, PHA or BHA exfoliating products, you can clear away rough, dry skin and bring back a healthy-looking glow. But there are a few differences.

People with non-sensitive, dry and rough skin will benefit the most from AHAs, while those with oily skin or acne-prone skin will see the most improvement from BHAs. BHAs are able to clear blockages and eliminate bacteria that are lingering inside the pore by penetrating deeply. PHAs, on the other hand, are unlike the other two acids. PHAs offer gradual penetration, making this type the ideal choice for those with sensitive skin.

Understanding which acids are most suitable for your skin type can help you achieve your skin care goals as quickly as possible! Learn more about these acids by talking to an esthetician at your favorite Eminence Organics Spa Partner and find out which acid is the right choice for you.

How To Make Your Skin Feel Stronger And Thicker

Written By:

Thea Christie

Is your skin looking thinner, less bouncy and more delicate? There's no question that the thickness of your skin changes with age. Gradually, your skin feels drier, more delicate and less elastic. And with thinner skin comes a weakened skin barrier. When the skin is healthy, it successfully performs its job of protecting us from irritation, skin diseases and inflammation. But when our skin barrier is impaired, the body can't defend itself. We’re going to explore how thin and weak skin can compromise the skin barrier, and repair methods for how to make the skin healthier and stronger.

Why Is My Skin So Thin? | How Will Thin Skin Impact Me?How To Make Skin Stronger & Thicker

Why Is My Skin So Thin?

Aging

As you age, you may see shifts in your skin texture and elasticity. The reason your skin might appear thinner and drier is because your body produces less collagen as you get older. Collagen is the structural protein that gives skin its elasticity, strength and suppleness. Collagen fibers are the sturdy columns that support the top layer of the skin which prevents saggy skin. But with collagen decline comes thinner and less supple skin. You can thank your genetics for how quickly your store of collagen decreases.

Collagen loss in the skin infographic

Lifestyle Factors Including Medication

As Healthline suggests, you may develop thin skin from long-term use of specific medications including:

  • Prescription blood thinners
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve)
  • Topical and oral corticosteroids
  • Over-the-counter aspirin

There are also a number of lifestyle factors that may cause early aging and thinning of the skin including:

  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol use
  • Lack of regular exercise combined with a poor diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates

Sun Exposure

Overexposure to ultraviolet light causes sun damage to your skin, injuring skin cells and reducing collagen and elastin. After many years of tanning (and burning), you may start to develop thinning skin. You might notice thinner skin across your face, arms or hands, the parts of the body most exposed to the sun. Sun damage can also appear in the form of age spots, sagging skin, wrinkling or skin cancer. You might notice thinner skin across your face, arms or hands, the parts of the body most exposed to the sun.

Tanning Beds

Along a similar vein, exposure to artificial radiation sources, such as tanning beds, can lead to skin damage (and thinner skin) as well as an increase in the risk of skin cancer. “Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is linked to getting severe sunburns, especially at a young age,” states the FDA. “Tanning causes the skin to lose elasticity and wrinkle prematurely. This leathery look may not show up until many years after you’ve had a tan or sunburn.” The FDA says you may also notice premature signs of aging such as wrinkles and dark spots.

Evidently, avoiding tanning beds is best practice if you not only want to strengthen your skin and avoid premature aging, but reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.

Menopause

The lowering of estrogen levels, especially during menopause, is a key contributor to the thinning of the skin. Collagen is key for maintaining the structure and firmness of the skin, but during menopause, a decrease in estrogen causes a drop in collagen levels, as well as moisture retention and oil production. You may notice thinning or sagging skin and fine lines and wrinkles.

How Will Thin Skin Impact Me?

Thin skin will not cause medical problems — it’s only a concern when your skin becomes easily bruised or damaged. As Medline Plus states: “As you age, you are at increased risk for skin injury. Your skin is thinner, more fragile, and you lose some of the protective fat layer.” The skin’s ability to snap back worsens with age, as does the thickness of the dermis. And with thin skin comes bruises and wrinkles.

On top of thinning skin, if you’re not looking after your skin at all, then its barrier might be compromised. The skin is composed of three layers: The hypodermis layer is made up of sweat glands, fat, and tissue. The next layer is called the dermis, which consists of the blood supply and nerves. The outermost layer is the epidermis, which makes up your skin barrier and defends you against bacteria and dirt. A healthy, functioning skin barrier blocks out environmental irritants, while keeping in natural oils and moisture. An unhealthy skin barrier will not defend you from potential skin issues such as irritation, inflammation or dryness. Thin skin is already fragile enough, but if you aren't moisturizing very dry skin, or you’re over-exfoliating, you might be irritating it. If you’d like to learn more about what causes a damaged skin barrier, read this extensive guide. Here's a breakdown of practical ways you can achieve stronger and thicker skin.

How To Make Skin Stronger And Thicker

Eat Foods That Help Collagen Production

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for increasing collagen production, and therefore, making our skin stronger and improving the barrier function of our skin. Vitamin C also plays a major role in making collagen, and you’ll find it in foods like broccoli, leafy greens and citrus fruits.

A variety of foods can help your body boost collagen production including:

  • Chicken
  • Leafy greens
  • Berries
  • Fish and shellfish
  • Egg whites
  • Citrus fruits

Use Skin Care Products With Peptides

If you are already happy with your diet, you can make your skin feel stronger with skin care products that contain peptides. Dermatologist Dr. Nancy Samolitis, MD, FAAD told Byrdie: "Peptides are essentially fragmented portions of proteins. So when they're used in skincare, the objective is for those fragments of collagen to stimulate collagen growth … Complete, non-fragmented proteins (like collagen) are not able to be directly absorbed through the top layer of skin, so these smaller pieces are able to get deep into the cellular level."

Apply Moisturizer Daily

To make your skin stronger, turn your attention from exfoliation to moisturization instead. Whether you're a dry, combination, oily or sensitive skin type, keeping your skin hydrated is the first step to skin health and having a strong skin barrier.

Your lack of hydration could be due to genetics; you might be just born with a dry skin type. However, if your skin type is actually oily, combination, sensitive or normal, dryness could be caused by anything from air conditioners or hot showers to weather. Help your skin stay strong by applying moisturizer after cleansing. This step helps lock in moisture and protect your skin from the environment.

In the video below, our Lead Skin Care Trainer Natalie Pergar lists her top moisturizer recommendations for each skin type.

4 Benefits Of Spa Facials

4 Benefits Of Spa Facials

Written By:

Karen Young Chester & Jen Wynn

Why are facials necessary? Can the treatment be performed at home by anyone? Actually, there are many techniques in an Eminence Organics facial that go far beyond simple cleansing. Incorporating massage, specialized treatments and extractions are just some of the benefits of a spa facial. Learn what is a facial, including four reasons why you should book spa treatments on a regular basis.

What Is A Facial? | Steps In A Treatment | Why Do I Need A Spa Facial? | Difference Between Professional & DIY FacialHow Often Should You Get A Facial?

What is a Facial?

Let’s start out with an obvious question: What is a facial anyway? A facial is a multi-step treatment completed by an esthetician that supercharges your skin care. We asked our Product Support Team to define the process:

“A facial can be a number of things. It can be a deep cleansing pore refining treatment, an anti-aging treat or an hour of relaxation to pamper yourself. It can be a customized skin care treatment to address the individual’s skin concerns, and range from a 20-30 minute peel or express facial, to a more luxurious 90-minute treatment.”

Our Product Support Representatives also add:

“The facial itself includes a number of steps to treat the skin. A facial includes a consultation, usually at the beginning, to fill out any necessary forms and to find out a bit more about your skin, health and any medications you might be taking that could affect the skin. Cleansing, toning, exfoliating, masks, moisturizers and serums are a few things you can expect from a basic facial. Eminence facials can incorporate our Hungarian massage techniques, promoting circulation to leave the skin with a clear, glowing complexion.”

Steps In A Facial Treatment

In fact, you can expect nine or more steps in a professional facial. Building on this explanation, your facial is likely to include:

  1. Assessment: The esthetician learns about your current skin care routine and any concerns you have.
  2. Cleansing: The esthetician removes any makeup and surface buildup with a cleansing product such as a cleansing gel, oil or water.
  3. Skin analysis: The esthetician takes a close look at your complexion, often using magnification, to identify your skin’s current state.
  4. Steaming: The esthetician often incorporates steam to soften pore congestion and assist with extractions, should you need them.
  5. Exfoliating: The esthetician applies an exfoliating treatment to remove the buildup of dead skin cells. Typically, this treatment will be of a higher concentration than the exfoliants you use at home.
  6. Extraction: The esthetician performs extractions if needed, clearing away blackheads and whiteheads.
  7. Facial massage: To relax the facial muscles and assist the skin with absorbing further products, the esthetician massages the face gently but thoroughly.
  8. Masking: One or more face masks are applied, each of which are carefully selected based on your skin assessment and analysis.
  9. Finishing: The esthetician completes the treatment with the appropriate finishing steps including toner, serums, moisturizers, eye care and SPF to condition and protect your skin from environmental stressors.

You will find that the esthetician will adjust these steps depending on your skin type or concerns. For example, should you be a sensitive skin type, they may not use steam. If clogged pores are not in issue, your esthetician may not perform extractions. If you have concerns about any step during a facial, don’t hesitate to ask the esthetician to explain their process.

Why Do I Need A Facial?

A facial is the best way to ensure you see the long-term results you want in your skin. Our Product Support Team says: “Estheticians, also called skin therapists, can teach you how to care for your skin properly. The practice of esthetics covers a variety of different techniques and treatments, one of which includes providing facials and caring for the health of the skin.” To simplify why this all matters, we’ve broken it down into four key benefits.

Eminence Organics Infographic: 4 Benefits Of Spa Facials

1. Get A Thorough Cleaning

Dermatologists liken spa facials to visits with your dentist. Sure, you brush and floss daily, but you still get your teeth professionally cleaned. In the same way, regular spa treatments are an essential complement to your daily skin care routine. Professional facials, especially acne facials, take the state of your complexion to the next level. Many skin conditions require continuous care, and the effectiveness of home skin care needs to be boosted with regular spa treatments. Together, at-home and in-spa treatments produce successful results, better and faster.

2. Hire A Pro Extractor

One of the biggest no-nos for problem skin is picking at your pimples. Every time you squeeze or touch a blemish, you’re at risk for scarring and dark marks. You can cause more harm than good by spreading bacteria across your skin, ultimately leading to more pimples. This isn’t to say that extractions are not effective, but that they can only be safely performed by a professional. A huge benefit to spa facials is that a professional can extract your blackheads and pustules properly, in a sterile environment.

3. Ask For An Expert Opinion

While it isn’t difficult to get a general idea of your skin type, decoding your skin concerns and conditions can make things tricky. With constant changes due to seasons, diet, age and even weather, it’s reassuring to get professional advice on a regular basis. For example, is your skin really dry or is it actually dehydrated? While dry skin is a type requiring more moisturizing oils to combat, dehydration is a condition requiring more water-based moisturizers to correct. With similar signs and symptoms, it can be tricky to sort out what you are dealing with, but this is exactly what an esthetician is trained to help with. During the consultation, your esthetician will be able to diagnose your skin and develop treatments specifically catered to you.

4. Relax And Unwind

Let’s be honest. One of the best reasons for getting a facial is the soothing spa experience. Facial massages, hot towels and the beautiful aroma of Eminence Organics products? What more can you ask for? And since stress always plays a factor on the condition of your skin, we say: Turn up the dial on your chill-out time. A contributing factor to wrinkles, acne and lack of luminosity, stress can impact your complexion. By creating a relaxing environment for your professional facial, your treatment will leave you glowing from the inside out.

What Is The Difference Between A Professional And A DIY Facial?

We know what you’re thinking but why can’t I DIY this experience? Light some candles, take extra time applying my favorite Eminence Organics mask, how is it really that different? The difference is twofold and both boil down to safety. One: With a professional facial, you are securing treatments that work deeper and are more potent than what you can use safely at home. Two: Treatments are applied with techniques and practices by a trained professional. There is really no way to recreate the results of a professional facial at home because you simply cannot safely perform the exfoliation, massage and extractions that an esthetician can — without running the risk of damaging your skin.

The last thing we want is for anyone to inadvertently damage their skin. Even if you avoid the DIY masks and face scrubs known to cause irritation, it is just as important to avoid certain techniques. This is why we are proud to offer high-quality, concentrated home care products that beautifully complement our more vigorous professional-only treatments. Used together, we promise your Eminence home care routine will extend the life of your professional facial, allowing you to reach your skin care goals.

How often should you get a spa facial?

The general recommendation for the frequency of a spa facial is around every three or four weeks, or once a month. But this really depends on the skin concern that you're treating and your age. Your esthetician should be able to provide you with a customized recommendation based on your skin. For example, if you're in your 20s and have healthy skin, you may only need a facial once a month. But if you're the same age and you have a large number of clogged pores and blemishes, the esthetician may recommend a facial every two to three weeks.

How Algae Affect Wrinkles and Fine Lines On Your Skin

Written By:

Karen Young Chester

No longer restricted to aquarium walls and sushi platters, algae are now breaking out as superstar ingredients in the skin care industry. From high nutrition content to ultra hydration and antioxidant delivery, people are buzzing about the benefits of algae on the skin, especially the popular blue-green, brown and red algae varieties. With their reputation as the “superfood of the sea,” algae are transforming skin care products. Read on to find out how they may help with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

What Are Algae? Blue-Green, Brown & Red Algae Skin Care Benefits | Algae In Our Marine Flower Peptide Collection

What Are Algae?

First of all, what are these aquatic organisms called algae? For clarification, we called on our in-house expert Katy Muenter who is a marine biologist and our Vice President of Product & Education. Katy explains: "Algae are special types of photosynthetic organisms that use the energy from the sun to grow. These range in size from a single cell to over 50 meters long, and can be found in every environment on the planet, including marine intertidal zones, hot springs, and even within ice and snow."

Algae have many unique adaptations that help protect them from environmental damage so they can survive in these extreme conditions. You also might not know that algae represent some of the most sustainable ingredients in skin care. The fast growth rates and minimal impact from harvest means that these superfoods of the sea can provide health and skin care benefits without concern over environmental impacts.

Globally sourced, sustainable algae map

Blue-Green, Brown And Red Algae Skin Care Benefits

Algae have been used for thousands of years in skin care for delivering skin hydration. The extraordinary properties of algae evolved from their many and varied living conditions. With advancements in skin care science, we can now harness the unique properties of algae.

Some benefits include:

  • Replenishing, hydrating skin benefits
  • A reduction in the appearance of wrinkles
  • An improvement in the appearance of skin firmness

Like land-based superfoods, blue-green and red algae are vibrant in color and contain antioxidant pigments that naturally protect the skin. These compounds boost the skin’s defenses against a variety of environmental stressors. Besides acting as antioxidant powerhouses, algae also contain high concentrations of nutrients and amino acids. The intense dose of nutrition and protein building blocks replenish the skin and deliver superior hydrating benefits.

More specifically, blue-green algae extract acts as a natural retinoid alternative that reduces wrinkles. The brown algae extract contributes to increasing the appearance of firmness, hydration and elasticity in the skin thanks to its high water-holding capacity and ability to protect against the appearance of aging caused by collagen and elastin degradation. Lastly, red algae extract contains vitamins, minerals, and amino-acids to reduce the visible signs of aging such as wrinkles and fine lines.

The marine flowers used in our collection are an assortment of freshwater and saltwater algae sourced from all over the planet. When combined, the algae work together to deliver a high concentration of different nutrients, minerals and amino acids while effectively reducing the appearance of fine lines and improving hydration. Let’s explore how the diverse and advanced skin care benefits of algae show up throughout our Marine Flower Peptide Collection

This combination encourages fewer fine lines and wrinkles, diminishes puffiness and provides deep hydration. The plant-based peptides are naturally derived from sacha inchi and rice protein and are used to enhance skin’s elasticity. They also contain compounds to boost the skin’s natural defense against drying effects of the sun and the visible signs of aging.

The Marine Flower Peptide Serum rejuvenates the appearance of skin and minimizes the appearance of wrinkles. It contains both blue-green and red algae extracts, which reduce the visible signs of aging. You can also use our Marine Flower Peptide Concentrate, a gel that keeps the skin firm and supple. It contains two types of algae. Blue-green algae extract reduces the appearance of wrinkles, while brown algae extract helps the skin appear firmer. The formula absorbs rapidly to reveal smoother, revitalized, supple-looking skin.

Foods To Eat And Avoid For Acne

Foods To Eat And Avoid For Acne

Written By:

Marle Tyrrell

Acne depends on a combination of genetics, hormones and environmental influences, but what is less known is the link between diet and acne. Dermatologists have often recommended elimination diets to see what foods flare up your skin. But what about the reverse? Do acne-fighting foods exist? We explore both possibilities and find out what scientists say you should be eating vs what food to avoid for acne.

Food Groups To Enjoy

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fats are healthy unsaturated fats that keep your immune system healthy and are found in:

  • Fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, anchovies, trout
  • Eggs
  • Flaxseeds
  • Walnuts
  • Soybeans and tofu

Several studies have considered an association between increased severity of acne with lower consumption of fish, while another found that participants who consumed more fish and seafood experienced fewer acne symptoms, like blackheads, papules, pustules and oily skin. Omega-3 fatty acids have also been associated with a decrease in sebum production, a contributing factor to acne development.

2. Vegetables And Grains: A Low GI-Diet

The glycemic index (GI) is a measurement system that ranks foods according to their effect on your blood sugar levels. Many scientific studies support the idea that foods with a low glycemic index are associated with a reduction in breakouts and acne lesions. High GI foods are foods to avoid for acne, which include potatoes, white bread, pasta, pretzels, dates and chips.

According to the Mayo Clinic, low glycemic index foods you can enjoy include:

  • Rice including basmati, doongara, long grain, brown
  • Vegetables: sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, zucchini, cauliflower, celery and more
  • Most fruits such as apples, strawberries and apricots
  • Chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans
  • Bran-based breakfast cereals like steel cut oats

Groups on low-glycemic load diets have seen a "significant" improvement of acne severity in comparison to those on a high glycemic diet after 12 weeks. Interestingly, one study even noted that the size of sebaceous glands was reduced in participants on a low glycemic load diet.

3. Complex Carbohydrates

Enjoying low glycemic foods made up of complex carbohydrates may also reduce your risk of developing acne. According to Healthline.com, complex carbohydrates include:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Nuts
  • Wholegrains

Several studies suggest complex carbohydrates are a good food choice for reducing the occurrence of acne lesions, while also having other health benefits such as being a more stable source of energy. On the flip side, this means avoiding high glycemic and potentially acne-triggering simple carbohydrates, like pasta, white rice, white bread, sugar, soda and sweet biscuits to minimize the risk of breakouts.

4. Probiotics

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your digestive system, especially for regulating gut health. Probiotics modulate the development of the immune system, often working to regulate the immune response toward anti-inflammatory states which could make them a good choice for those with inflammatory conditions like acne, skin inflammation, rosacea or dryness due to a damaged skin barrier.

According to Harvard Health, one of the best ways to consume more probiotics is to enjoy more fermented foods. Their list of the most common foods that naturally contain probiotics to help fight acne include:

  • Yogurt
  • Kefir
  • Kombucha
  • Sauerkraut
  • Pickles
  • Miso
  • Tempeh
  • Kimchi
  • Sourdough bread

5. Tea

Tea drinkers rejoice! Due to the antioxidants and vitamins found in many popular herbal teas, tea drinking is a popular route to reducing the rate of acne. Matcha, turmeric, rooibos, spearmint and chamomile tea have all been recognized for their skin-clearing potential. In one study of 80 women aged 25 – 45 years, participants with acne consumed a decaffeinated green tea extract and almost 80% of study participants saw an improvement in their skin.

Green tea too has also been shown to reduce the number of inflammatory lesions on the nose and chin. In one study of 80 women aged 25 – 45 years, participants with acne consumed a decaffeinated green tea extract and almost 80% of study participants saw an improvement in their skin.

Foods You May Want To Avoid For Acne

While every person is different, scientific studies have advised some hesitation about consuming the following foods to reduce acne. We’d recommend always talking to your doctor or dermatologist before making major diet changes.

Alcohol

As Healthline states, drinking alcohol does not directly cause acne. However, it does influence your skin's health and may worsen acne. After all, alcohol is a diuretic, encouraging your body to get rid of fluids, potentially leading to dehydration and dry skin. Drying up the skin may cause the skin to look dull and fatigued, as well as bring out fine lines and wrinkles.

Alcohol may also aggravate skin due to the sugar and carbohydrate levels for some types of alcohol. Elevated glycemic indexes due to large amounts of carbohydates have been associated with acne,” dermatologist Dr. Murphy-Rose tells Sunday Edit. Murphy-Rose believes that alcohol, particularly sugary mixed cocktails, can exacerbate breakouts due to sugar content

Milk Products

Many studies agree that consuming milk can irritate the skin or lead to an increase in acne lesions, but the jury is still out on why exactly this is. One theory suggests that since acne can be influenced by hormonal imbalances, adding additional hormones through animal milk may lead to breakouts.

One study goes as far as to say that “milk, milk protein supplements and other dairy products should be limited or completely eliminated” for those with acne. Skim milk has also been spotlighted for causing closed comedones due to suspected changes in the bioactivity of biologically active molecules in the production process.

However, it has also been suggested that fermented dairy products like kefir or buttermilk could benefit acne, due to the bacteria contained in these drinks (see our section on probiotics above). These beneficial bacteria could reduce skin inflammation and decrease sebum production.

Chocolate

Overall nutrition contributes to breakouts, where chocolate consumption is just a small part of the picture. As suggested earlier, high glycemic diets consisting of sugar, carbohydrates and fat — including sugary snacks, sugary drinks, processed cereals and breads — have been linked to inflammatory responses like acne. A low glycemic diet may help with acne breakouts as a result.

Several studies have reported a link between eating chocolate and developing breakouts, one noting a statistically significant increase in acne lesions after cocoa consumption and the other study seeing an increase in lesions just 48 hours after eating chocolate. However, much more research needs to be done.
