Trees For The Future: One Farmer's Story

Written By:

Taryl Stelmaschuk

At Eminence Organic Skin Care, we’re bursting with gratitude for everything nature gives us. From fruits and seeds to herbs and flowers, so many plants play an essential role in our health, our diets and, of course, in skin care. We feature potent botanicals in every product, so we’ve seen the power of organics firsthand. With that in mind, we feel it’s only right to give back to the earth that gives us so much. That’s why Eminence Organics created Forests for the Future™ in 2013.

Through this initiative, we plant a tree for every product sold. We also train farmers and support environmental restoration projects in the rural communities where trees are planted. This is all made possible by our generous partner, Trees for the Future, an incredible non-profit organization that improves the livelihoods of impoverished farmers by training them in agroforestry and sustainable land use, while helping to organize the hands-on work to make our dreams a reality.

Let’s meet David Abach, a Kenyan farmer who spoke about the numerous benefits his farm has seen since joining this program, and get a deeper look at the real impact that Eminence Organics and Trees for the Future make.

David’s Story

When David joined the Eminence-sponsored Trees for the Future’s Forest Garden Training Program in 2020, he identified that roughly half a hectare of his farm could be converted into a Forest Garden

Over the past decade, Trees for the Future has championed a Forest Garden approach. This method uses regenerative farming principles to simulate a natural forest ecosystem within existing farmlands. Forest Gardens are made up of various trees, shrubs, fruits, vegetables and herbs placed strategically to offer each plant the support it needs to sustain itself while replenishing the land with much-needed vitamins and minerals.

Through the education provided by the program, David quickly started learning about sustainable and regenerative agroforestry techniques that could directly benefit his land.

A Better Farm

Farms that incorporate Forest Gardens produce a large variety of healthy, wholesome crops, giving farmers access to nutritious food. This increases biodiversity and the farmers’ income while restoring their land and capturing atmospheric carbon. Speaking on biodiversity, David says, “[My farm] is better today. Previously, I planted only maize and beans. But because of Trees for the Future, I have Cajanus trees and vegetables for getting food.”

David is implementing a number of regenerative agroforestry techniques in his Forest Garden. One such technique is called alley cropping. This method uses rows of trees or shrubs to create alleys that provide the structure needed to grow multiple crops within a limited space. As mentioned, David uses Cajanus (pigeon peas) in his alley cropping to help increase vital nutrients in his soil. This serves as a living fence around the perimeter of the Forest Garden, which not only enriches the soil but also provides animal fodder and serves as a windbreak. “Without the trees ... very heavy wind can fell the crops,” causing damage to David’s crop and adversely affecting his quality of living.

Thousands of Trees

In just three years, David has gone from 12 trees on this section of his land to more than 3,300. Though still growing and reaching maturity, these trees are already creating a beneficial microclimate on his farm.

These trees have helped David combat an issue that previously left his crops vulnerable: Kenya’s climate. “During the dry season, there is [a different] climate within the [Forest] Garden,” David explains. While the arid environment can wreak havoc on crops, the presence of trees “helps the crops to not dry so much, unlike when it is just bare.”

Joining the Carbon Market

Through his participation in the Trees for the Future program, David has also gained the ability to join the thriving carbon market. The carbon market refers to a system for buying and selling “carbon credits,” which allow organizations to buy into an environmental project. This raises much-needed funds while allowing corporations to offset their greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate carbon dioxide’s effect on our atmosphere. The trees on David’s farm will let him earn an additional stream of income through carbon credit sales as Trees for the Future Forest Garden farmers in Kenya are able to participate in the carbon market.

Better Soil

Outside his Forest Garden, David has continued to grow maize and beans using traditional methods. The difference between what grows inside the Forest Garden and outside of it is stark.

“There is a big difference in soil quality,” he shares. “If you compare where there are vegetables growing alongside the Cajanus and where there is maize [without Cajanus], you find that the maize is yellow. It shows that there is nutrient deficiency — unlike where I am using compost. I see that the Forest Garden is better.” The Cajanus trees help to enrich David’s land with nitrogen, producing hearty, robust crops that he can sell or use to sustain his family.

A Promising Future

From food production to climate change mitigation, David is using his Forest Garden, created through the work of these initiatives, to build a better life for himself and his 13-person household.

“Before, I had to take money from my pocket to get vegetables. Now, because I get vegetables from my Forest Garden, what I would have used to buy vegetables I can use to buy fish and meat and school items for my children.”

Since David joined the Trees for the Future Forest Garden Training Program, sponsored in-part by Eminence Organic Skin Care, he’s been able to access the education and resources that have made all of this possible. We are thrilled that we played a role in providing David with a stable source of food and income to help him create a better life.

The Benefits Of Sunscreen: Why Do I Need To Wear SPF Every Day?

The Benefits Of Sunscreen: Why Do I Need To Wear SPF Every Day?

Written By:

Thea Christie

Suncreen. It protects us from sun damage, reduces our risk of skin cancer, prevents the early onset of wrinkles and starts to work within minutes of application. In other words, it’s one of the most effective beauty products around. Most of us already know the importance of SPF during the summer when the sun is shining down on us. But if you want to keep your skin looking radiant and healthy, you actually need to wear sunscreen every single day. Here are the reasons why:

Why Do I Need SPF? The Benefits Of Sunscreen

1. Reduces Your Risk of Skin Cancer

Sunscreen protects your skin and reduces your risk of developing skin cancer and skin pre-cancers. Applying SPF in conjunction with other sun protection behaviors — like covering up in dark clothing and wearing a hat and sunglasses — reduces the harmful effects of sun exposure. In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation claims that applying sunscreen with an SPF factor of 15 reduces your chance of developing squamous cell carcinoma by 40% and your melanoma risk (the deadliest skin cancer) by 50%.

2. Protects Against Sunburn

Sunlight actually consists of two types of harmful rays, UVA and UVB. UVA rays from the sun (and the same ones you get in tanning booths) are mainly linked to long-term skin damage like the formation of wrinkles, and are also associated with some skin cancers. It’s UVB rays, however, that are responsible for sunburn and are thought to cause most skin cancers. Not only are sunburns painful, they have a direct link to the most deadly types of cancer. According to Healthline: “Even a single sunburn can increase a person’s risk of skin cancer. This is because when the skin absorbs ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight, it can damage the genetic material in skin cells.” Thankfully, sunscreen defends the skin against UV rays by absorbing, reflecting or scattering sunlight.

3. Helps Avoid Inflammation & Redness

Too much time in the sun will result in sunburn, severe skin reddening and inflammation of the skin. According to Medical News Today: “The ultraviolet rays from the sun damage the skin, which turns red as the body directs more blood to the affected area to repair the damage.”

4. Prevents The Early Onset Of Wrinkles & Fine Lines

When it comes to developing wrinkles, fine lines and crow’s feet, one of the most effective preventative formulas is sunscreen. Lengthy exposure to UVA rays prematurely ages your skin and results in the loss of collagen and skin elasticity. In fact, up to 90% of visible signs of aging are caused by sun damage. By introducing SPF into your daily skin care routine, you’re warding off the early signs of aging with minimal effort.

5. Helps Protect Against Blotchy Skin & Hyperpigmentation

Uneven skin pigmentation (or hyperpigmentation) refers to parts of the skin becoming discolored or darkening in an inconsistent way. This can be hereditary, but it can also be caused by sun exposure. Blotchy skin or dark spots may spring up on the face, hands and other parts of the body that are regularly exposed to the sun.

The good news? There is a simple way to avoid dark spots (as well as sunburn, wrinkles and skin cancer) — and the solution is wearing sunscreen rain or shine, not just in summer.

6. Stops DNA Damage

Scientific studies have found that sunlight induces DNA damage and can trigger skin carcinogenesis and photoaging. Studies state: “Many of the deleterious human health effects that result from sunlight exposure are associated with a chain of events that begins with the formation of DNA damage. These lesions can lead to inflammatory and immunosuppressive processes in the epithelial tissue as well as accelerated aging and tumor development.”

Clearly, sun exposure can have a profound effect and potentially cause premature skin aging, skin cancer and many other skin changes. If you think you can avoid the sun’s rays in winter or by sitting in the office, you might be surprised to learn about these next situations when SPF is still a must:

5 Surprising Situations When You Need To Wear SPF

1. Indoors

For those spending all day indoors, UVA light can still reach you by penetrating window glass. If your office is bright from sunlight streaming through the windows, you're receiving a similar amount of UVA rays as you would be if you were outside.

2. At High Altitudes

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UVB rays can cause sun damage and sunburn even if you’ve chosen a skiing holiday over a week at the beach. Snow reflects up to 80% of the sun’s damaging rays, so next time you're on the slopes, apply sunscreen to the exposed parts of your face to protect against the increased UV exposure from the reflection.

3. During Winter

The ozone layer is the part of the atmosphere that absorbs the radiation from the sun. During the winter months, the ozone layer thins out, meaning you have less defense against the sun’s rays. The Skin Cancer Foundation suggests applying SPF to your entire body before you get dressed. At a minimum, they recommend applying sunscreen to areas that aren't covered by clothes, like your ears, neck, scalp, hands and your face (but you already knew that).

4. On Cloudy Days

The Skin Cancer Foundation also states that even when it’s cloudy, up to 80% of the sun’s UV radiation reaches Earth. Unfortunately, that means outside activity on an overcast day (any season of the year) can still result in skin damage.

5. Through Light Clothing

You would assume that all clothing protects us from sun damage, but some lightweight fabrics like silk, crepe or cotton tend to allow light through. Also, the lighter the color of the garment, the more likely sunlight will hit the skin. For example, a white cotton t-shirt only protects with the equivalency of SPF 5! For more protection, wear dark-colored, dense fabrics. Synthetic and semisynthetic fibers like polyester or rayon, plus heavy, tightly woven fabrics like wool, denim or corduroy, provide the most defense — though they may not be what you reach for on a sweltering summer day!

Watch Lead Skin Care Trainer Natalie Pergar as she reveals her favorite all-mineral SPF moisturizers, perfect for daily use.

What SPF Is Best For Everyday Use?

When choosing a sunscreen, look for the phrase “broad spectrum.” This description signals that the formula protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Spa Treatments To Get Your Clients' Skin Ready For Fall

Written By:

Libby Wright

Fall is upon us, which means that sunny beach days and long night dining al fresco have been replaced by more structured routines, cozy sweaters and, possibly, some new habits. Being back on a schedule is a good thing, especially when it comes to self-care. Read on to find out which treatments will help your Clients replenish, refresh and pamper their post-summer skin.

Facials | Exfoliation | Body Wraps | Massages | Finishing Touches And Home Care

Seasonal Skin Care Transition

A long summer of travel, fun at the beach and late nights by the campfire may be in the rearview mirror, but the evidence is still front and center on your Clients’ skin. Months of sun, chlorine, salt water (and maybe a few cocktails) may have stripped away moisture, and recent temperature fluctutations are no doubt causing some issues. Clients could use some major replenishing from head to toe.

Curb the wear and tear summer has had on your Clients' skin with exfoliating and hydrating treatments that will help restore glow to dull skin and top up the lost moisture reserves. Guide your Clients through this transition and help them repair from the summer damage while preparing for the onslaught of fall and winter.

Facials

Let’s face it: There is never a bad time to get a facial. Clients can reap the benefits of a deep cleansing or restorative treatment all year round. And while many types of facials are pretty seasonally fluid, there are definitely a few facial treatments to lean into and others to avoid this time of year.

Some facials are a no-go in the summer because they can make skin especially sensitive to harmful UV rays. There is a risk that sun exposure on freshly lasered or chemically peeled skin can cause pigment damage (hyperpigmentation), increased inflammation and additional complications. But come fall, the skin is ready for a good peel and some hydration.

As summer turns to autumn, the combination of cold and rainy weather outside and hot air being circulated indoors can create the perfect storm of skin issues. If the summer fun dried out your Clients’ skin, expect the mixed bag of autumn temperatures to further dehydrate the complexion and make it look dull, patchy and parched. Fall is actually an ideal time for a peel for a few reasons. That post-summer glow fades quickly, leaving behind a tired complexion in need of some moisture. Gentle exfoliation in the form of a peel encourages faster cell turnover, which gently breaks down the glue that holds dead skin right where you don’t want it.

The Yam & Pumpkin Pro Enzyme Peel 20% leans right into the fall theme. Yam pulp purée — which is high in beta carotene and vitamins to fight the signs of aging — plays well with its fall counterpart, pumpkin — which is rich in smoothing enzymes, amino acids and antioxidants. With additional exfoliating power from glycolic acid, lactic acid and enzymes from papaya and pineapples, this peel is a powerhouse that can reduce the appearance of dark spots, fine lines and sun damage — leaving skin looking firm and radiant. And if your Clients love the results, send them home with the Yam & Pumpkin Enzyme Peel 5% so they can continue the natural exfoliation between spa visits.

Exfoliation

And while we're on the theme, exfoliation is a great way to replenish the post-summer skin from head to toe. Excessive hours in the sun, sand and surf can do a number on the texture and hydration levels all over the body, but exfoliating skin can do wonders as we head into fall. A thorough scrub gets rid of the lingering dead skin cells to reveal fresher, smoother-looking skin. A beneficial treatment on its own, a body exfoliation is also a great add-on before another treatment, like a body wrap.

A professional scrub is great way to say goodbye to rough, dry summer-ravaged skin. And since we’re all about fall right now, our Cranberry Pomegranate Sugar Scrub creates the perfect mood for the season. Cranberry is high in vitamins and antioxidants, as are other ingredients like pomegranate and green tea. Our Stone Crop Revitalizing Body Scrub is another great option this season. Comforting stone crop paired with antioxidant-rich lemon peel works in tandem to brighten and smooth the skin. Follow with a wrap, massage, shower and a soothing moisturizer and your Client will leave with a major glow.

Body Wraps

Body wraps are great any time of year, but there is something extra special about being wrapped up and left under a heated blanket in the fall. Benefits to Clients can range from increasing circulation to the area to flushing out extra water weight and fluids, tightening the skin and firming the texture.

Eminence Organic Skin Care herbal body wraps are designed to heal dryness, detox and tighten the skin all over. The Paprika Herbal Treatment contains the spice, plus a safe amount of stinging nettle, to help energize the appearance of skin for a healthy-looking glow. This zippy wrap also contains honey to nourish and hydrate. Another spicy option is the Herbal Cellulite Treatment. Like the paprika treatment, this rejuvenating and toning body wrap makes the skin feel warm and results in a rosy glow.

For a real treat, the Chocolate Truffle Body Wrap is an irresistibly delicious option with lots of benefits. This wrap tightens and tones the look of crepey, wrinkled skin, making it an ideal choice for addressing signs of too much sun in summers past. Plus, cocoa is high in antioxidants, while almond, jojoba and macadamia nut oils soften and hydrate.

Massages

Expanding on the cozy theme, nothing feels better on a cool autumn day than a relaxing massage. Whether it’s deep tissue, Swedish, lymphatic drainage or a warming hot stone massage, autumn is a good time to encourage Clients to take some time for themselves during these hectic days of the season.

For the best slip and glide, our Product Support Team recommends the Apricot Body Oil, which contains apricot kernel, grape seed and jojoba oils, which help make the skin feel incredibly soft and smooth. Apricot kernel oil is high in Vitamins A, C and E, and both grape seed and jojoba are incredibly nourishing and hydrating.

Another Eminence Organics oil that is perfect for massage is the Stone Crop Body Oil, which is formulated with arnica and oils from stone crop, rosehip and avocado to moisturize. Spa Professional Lindsay O. left a website review singing the praises of this oil, writing: “I have been using the Stone Crop Oil in my massage treatment room ... and I have to say it’s fantastic! It’s a great medium for deep tissue massage as you need very little, do not have to reapply and it smells fresh! Something we noticed is that the arnica is an added bonus for recovering after receiving a deep tissue massage!"

Finishing Touches And Home Care

Don’t let your Clients forget that sunscreen is a non-negotiable in their routine, even on cloudy fall days. Our Radiant Protection SPF Fluid is a moisturizing all-mineral fluid and contains bakuchiol, a gentle alternative to conventional retinol. Make sure to send them home with samples to try it out, or suggest another option like the Lilikoi Daily Defense Moisturizer SPF 40 which does double duty and works well for all skin types.

Encourage Clients to continue the self-care beyond the treatment room with a selection of Eminence products that they can use at home to keep their results going between visits.

And if you're looking to get some pampering this fall, make an appointment with your nearest Eminence Organics Spa Partner.

Double Masking: How To Apply Facial Masks

Double Masking: How To Apply Facial Masks

Written By:

Karen Young Chester

There’s nothing quite like a face mask to amp up your skin care routine. The right mask can deliver a shot of nutrition, plus all sorts of benefits — from hydrating to brightening the look of dark spots, absorbing excess oil and minimizing the look of fine lines and wrinkles. And because they are designed to deliver higher concentrations of ingredients, masks can give your skin an instant boost, making them an easy and convenient addition to your at-home routine. With so many potential benefits and formulas created for different needs, adding a masking step to your routine a couple of times a week can do a lot of good. But let’s take it a step further, shall we? If one mask is good, can doubling (or tripling) it be even better? Can you use two or more facial masks in one day? The answer is absolutely!

Double masking is gaining popularity, and for good reason. We all have different needs, and while there are masks that address multiple skin issues, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Whether it’s a change in seasons, fluctuating hormones or your skin is just in need of some TLC, the right combination to tackle those issues can change too. Using two or more masks in one session allows you to personalize a formula that will work for your specific needs and give you the results you’re looking for.

What Is Double Masking? | Layering | Masking In Sequence | Masking In Combination | Other Ways To Multi-Mask

What Is Double Masking?

Double masking is essentially applying more than one mask at a time in the same self-care session. There are a few ways to do it:

  • Layering involves applying one mask and then layering the next mask on top of it.
  • Double masking in sequence is done by applying one mask, letting it sit for the recommended amount of time, then rinsing it off and applying the next one. This gives your skin a second helping of concentrated ingredients all in one sitting.
  • Double masking in combination is about mixing the masks together (in your hands or a small bowl) and then applying the mixture to your face or other area.
  • Spot masking (or multi-masking) is done by applying different masks to different parts of the face all at once. For example, if your T-zone is oily, but your cheeks are dry, applying masks that address the specific issue in each area of the face can provide a super customized treatment that targets the issue without aggravating the rest of your combination skin.

The benefits of a face mask depend on the ingredients they provide. Masks can deliver higher concentrations of ingredients to plump, hydrate and balance the skin. For example, masks containing hyaluronic acid have the added benefit of attracting and binding moisture, while a clay mask can help tighten and clarify skin. Gel face masks may be infused with ingredients that rehydrate and help the skin with recovery. Exfoliating masks may contain actives that slough off dulling dead skin cells and cleanse pores.

Ready to learn about mixing and matching your masks at home? Read on to find out more about which masks work beautifully together!

Double Masking In Layers

1. Radish Seed Refining Peel  + Lime Stimulating Masque

The first type of double masking involves applying one mask on top of the other in layers, a technique that works wonders if you're a fan of both the Radish Seed Refining Peel and the Lime Stimulating Masque. Our Radish Seed Refining Peel contains radish seed extract to reduce the look of fine lines, plus whole grain oat that cleanses and gives the appearance of smoother skin. In addition, the Lime Stimulating Masque revives the skin so you may experience a very mild glow.

To get the most out of this dynamic duo, start by applying a small amount of the Radish Seed Refining Peel to the entire face. Next, apply the Lime Stimulating Masque directly on top of the first mask. Wait 5 — 10 minutes for the masks to dry, then scrub them off in a circular motion with a lukewarm face cloth.

2. Turmeric Energizing Treatment + Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Masque

Another mask combo that layers well is the Turmeric Energizing Treatment with the Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Masque. Formulated with turmeric, citrine gemstones and zeolite, the Turmeric Energizing Treatment offers a warm, exfoliating sensation with the purpose of revealing silky, luminous skin. Turmeric is an antioxidant, known to visibly brighten the appearance of skin and reduce the look of puffiness. The inclusion of citrine gemstones helps to energize and recharge the skin, while zeolite invigorates the skin’s appearance.

Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Masque brightens the appearance of the skin. More specifically, it contains the powerhouse ingredient Vitamin C, which delivers a brighter-looking complexion, evens out skin tone and diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Are you ready for a spicy experience that leaves the skin looking radiant? Apply one small scoop of the Turmeric Energizing Treatment powder into the outer cap and stir in a few drops of water until your mask looks fluffy in texture. Apply a thin layer to the entire face. Next, layer a small amount of the Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Masque on top. The Turmeric Energizing Treatment requires application for a little longer than most of our other masks, so leave both masks on for approximately 30 minutes. Then you can remove them with a warm face cloth or rinse them off with lukewarm water.

Before we get to the next mask combination, watch Lead Skin Care Trainer Natalie Pergar explore two easy ways to combine your favorite masks.

3. Raspberry Pore Refining Masque + Firm Skin Acai Masque

Don’t we all just want a smooth, firm-looking complexion? Try layering the Raspberry Pore Refining Masque and the Firm Skin Acai Masque to minimize and refine the look of pores. This combination also plumps and hydrates the appearance of skin with formulas designed to minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Both masks share similar ingredients and benefits — the Raspberry Pore Refining Masque contains raspberry, blueberry and blackberry, while our Firm Skin Acai Masque contains the same berry blend plus the exotic acai berry. Raspberry is an antioxidant known to tighten the appearance of pores. Blackberry, blueberry and acai berry contain Vitamin C, which helps balance out the skin’s tone.

To use, emulsify a small amount of both masks in your hand. Add a few drops of water. Apply evenly over the entire face. Allow the masks to dry for 5 — 10 minutes and then remove with a warm face cloth.

Double Masking In Sequence

4. Clear Skin Probiotic Masque + Strawberry Rhubarb Masque

Another unique way of double masking is experiencing two face masks in a row. Apply the first mask, let it sit, then rinse and apply the second mask. With this application technique, the combination of our Clear Skin Probiotic Masque and Strawberry Rhubarb Masque creates one of our most effective pairings. Starting with the Clear Skin Probiotic Masque, you kick off your masking routine with yogurt and tea tree oil to help you achieve healthy, clear skin. In addition to these potent ingredients, the Clear Skin Probiotic Masque contains cooling cucumber that evens out the look of your skin tone. It also contains yogurt, a source of lactic acid. As the second product in this problem skin care duo, the Strawberry Rhubarb Masque provides additional gentle exfoliation, brightening your skin’s appearance and minimizing the look of pores. It even leaves your complexion looking refreshed, plumped and hydrated thanks to its inclusion of a Botanical Hyaluronic Acid Complex. The masque also contains shea butter and grape seed oil to nourish your skin.

Emulsify a small amount of Clear Skin Probiotic Masque in your hand with a few drops of water. Apply evenly over the entire face. Allow the mask to dry 5 — 10 minutes and then gently rinse off. Next, apply the Strawberry Rhubarb Masque and follow the exact same steps.

5. Eight Greens Phyto Masque — Hot + Calm Skin Arnica Masque

Spice things up in your skin care routine by adding hot paprika! You’ll find it in the award-winning Eight Greens Phyto Masque — Hot, a mask that gives your skin a unique tingling response, creating a temporary redness, before building into a rosy glow. That’s why this mask pairs so well with the soothing sensation of the Calm Skin Arnica Masque

The Calm Skin Arnica Masque not only minimizes signs of redness, it also contains our Biocomplex2™ formulation: a booster of antioxidants, Coenzyme Q10 and Alpha Lipoic Acid to reduce the look of wrinkles and improve the appearance of the skin.

First, apply a thin layer of Eight Greens Phyto Masque — Hot to your face and leave it on for 5 — 10 minutes before washing it off. Please note that your skin will feel warm after application and may appear flushed for about one hour.

Next, with a clean face, apply a thin layer of the Calm Skin Arnica Masque and leave this on for 5 — 10 minutes before also washing it off. This should diminish the appearance of excessive redness and ensure that your complexion appears toned and balanced.

6. Eight Greens Phyto Masque — Hot + Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Masque

Consider using the Eight Greens Phyto Masque — Hot immediately followed by the Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Masque. The Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Masque contains a powerful formula of Vitamin C, which improves the appearance of skin elasticity and hydration. You will notice an improvement in the look of fine lines and wrinkles too.

Apply a small amount of Eight Greens Phyto Masque — Hot to your face and wait 5 — 10 minutes before rinsing. Next, apply the Citrus & Kale Potent C+E Masque to clean skin, leave on for 5 — 10 minutes and rinse off.

Double Masking In Combination

7. Bamboo Age Corrective Masque + Strawberry Rhubarb Masque

The Bamboo Age Corrective Masque and the Strawberry Rhubarb Masque is a pairing that plays well together. If your goal is skin that appears lifted and firm, this mask mixture is for you. The Bamboo Age Corrective Masque contains a Natural Retinol Alternative which firms the look of your skin, while the Strawberry Rhubarb Masque exfoliates to reveal a brighter-looking complexion. This combo will replenish and restore by visibly targeting the look of wrinkles and fine lines.

Mix the two masks together in your hands or in a small bowl and add a few drops of water. Apply the mixture evenly over the face and neck. Leave on for 5 — 10 minutes and remove with a warm, wet towel.

Body third

Some Options To Mix, Pair Or Layer

Some masks can be combined a few different ways based on your needs. The following combinations can be mixed, paired or layered, depending on your desired results or even your schedule. Hint: Save time and create a powerful punch by mixing them together, which means less waiting time and only one rinsing session.

For best results, mix a small amount of these masks into your hand with a few drops of water. Apply evenly over the face, neck and décolleté. If layering, allow each mask to dry for 2 — 3 minutes before applying the subsequent mask. Best Facial Oils For Gua Sha Massage

Written By:

Clara Young

Gua sha facials have become the latest viral at-home beauty treatment. Though it’s been trending in recent years, the benefits of gua sha have been observed for centuries. Often done with face oils, one of the benefits of the ritual is that it helps the nourishing ingredients absorb deeper into the skin, creating the look of a smooth, glowing and sculpted complexion. Read on as we explain the function of facial oils and suggest some options that you can incorporate to get the best out of your gua sha facial.

What Is Gua Sha And What Does It Do For The Face?

Gua sha is a traditional Chinese practice with numerous health benefits. And while it’s been around for centuries, the ancient, low-tech practice has never been more popular than it is today thanks to social media.

Let’s backtrack a little to exactly what the gua sha practice is. Gua sha first appeared in 22 CE in a Chinese medical text called the Shan Han Lun. It is a technique that, at the time, used the edge of a coin or a spoon to vigorously “scrape” parts of the body, inciting redness (blood flow) to the area. This stimulation of acupressure points encourages the healing flow of “chi” or energy.

Gua sha facials done using modern techniques are much gentler than the traditional approach. They are performed using a flat, contoured stone like rose quartz or jade, which is swept comfortably across your nicely oiled face and neck to boost the skin’s blood circulation. This is the secret behind the gua sha glow!

The treatment also helps flush out toxins by improving lymphatic drainage, temporarily diminishing any puffiness. Licensed esthetician Ali Tobia says, “Gua sha works to move those collected fluids into the lymphatic system where they get cleaned and mixed back into your bloodstream. Unlike the circulatory system, there is no pump for the lymphatic system … By performing gua sha techniques, you are giving your lymphatic system the boost that it needs to rid yourself of the fluids that are stuck beneath the surface of your skin and causing your face to bloat.”

Gua sha may have other benefits too. It appears to relax the fibrous, collagen-rich connective tissue called fascia, which covers the facial muscles. This helps smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and may even encourage collagen and elastin formation. Facialist and acupuncturist Ada Ooi says, “[Gua sha] has significant brightening, lifting and sculpting improvements for your face. It stops the face from holding tension and softens the look of any fine lines that may have occurred as a result.” Regular gua sha facials can help define the contouring of cheekbone and jawline, thanks to the upward sweeping motion “lifting” the face and neck.

What is undisputed is that gua sha facials are incredible de-stressors. The action of stroking a rounded stone over lightly oiled skin lifts your mood and reduces anxiety. Studies show that gua sha facials relieve sinus pressure, headaches and tension in the jaw. Easy to perform, gua sha facials come with many potential benefits.

Why Do We Need Oil For Gua Sha

Facial oils give the skin some slickness, which allows your gua sha tool to glide over your skin with minimal friction. Shiri Sarfati, a Miami-based beauty expert and licensed esthetician, explains, “It’s important to have something that provides enough slip so that you can truly move the [tool] along the facial contours. For the job, oils tend to work better than serums.” The treatment also infuses the nourishing ingredients in facial oils deeper into your skin where they can work their magic — which is why choosing the right oil for your skin’s needs is important.

Which Oils Work Best For Gua Sha

Not sure how to choose the right oil for you? Read on to learn more about some of the oils we recommend and how they can enhance the benefits of your gua sha facial.

Rosehip Oil: Rich in Vitamins C and E, beta-carotene and essential fatty acids, rosehip oil is a major multitasker. It improves your skin’s moisture, tone and texture, and is ideal for contouring.

Jojoba Oil: This “oil” is actually a wax ester, and wax esters are the main component in human sebum. Jojoba oil mimics the natural sebum in our skin, sealing moisture without clogging pores or exacerbating acne.

Seabuckthorn Oil: A super-nourishing oil packed full of powerful antioxidants, vitamins and essential fatty acids, seabuckthorn oil is another great gua sha facial oil because the treatment sends the oil’s benefits deep into the skin.

Camellia Oil: This dense, highly moisturizing ingredient revitalizes and rejuvenates the look of skin. A gua sha facial done with this oil gives your skin an incredible glow, leaving it feeling soft and supple.

Marula Oil: Rich in fatty acids, this super hydrator works in perfect tandem with camellia oil for soft, smooth, radiant skin. Marula oil also effectively combats visible signs of aging from environmental stressors.

Clary Sage Oil: Calming clary sage oil is a great choice for oily skin types as it balances your skin’s oil production.

Olive Oil: Not just for salads, olive oil soothes the look of dry skin by deeply hydrating it, giving it the appearance of plumpness.

Our intensely hydrating and skin-protecting Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil boasts three of gua sha’s favorite oils: jojoba, rosehip and seabuckthorn. Rich in essential fatty acids that help problem skin and promote hydration and elasticity, Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil not only feels good, it’s good for your skin.

Find camellia and marula oils in our ultra-sensuous Camellia Glow Solid Face Oil. Just a little of this skin-softening, super-hydrating floral concentrate goes a long way to a supremely relaxing and beneficial gua sha facial. Warm a quarter-sized dollop in the palm of your hands before applying to face, neck and décolletage. Customer Delena says in an online review, “I've been using this solid face oil for the past year and I am obsessed. It is amazing. I live in a very dry climate and it provides excellent hydration and a beautiful glow to my skin. A little goes a long way.”

Facial Recovery Oil fuses olive oil, precious herbs and clary sage oil in a luxurious formula that thoroughly tones and hydrates your skin.

The Benefits Of Niacinamide

The Benefits Of Niacinamide

Written By:

Libby Wright

Niacinamide. If it sounds familiar, that’s probably because It’s been buzzy in the skin care world forever. A form of Vitamin B3, niacinamide is a nutrient that is required by the body to maintain healthy cells and helps turn the foods you eat into energy. But beyond its effects on your body from the inside, niacinamide has major benefits for your skin too. Read on to learn more about the ways this vitamin can help your skin care and whether it’s right for you.

What Is Niacinamide?

In the context of skin care, niacinamide is a topical version of Vitamin B3. Used as an active ingredient in many products, this water-soluble vitamin has a number of functions: It helps lock in hydration, minimizes large pores, improves the look of uneven skin tone, softens the appearance of fine lines, brightens skin, regulates oil production, strengthens a weak barrier and boosts cell-building proteins in the skin. In other words, it’s the multitasking jack-of-all-trades of the skin care world.

Thanks to the wide variety of benefits it offers your skin, niacinamide is a perfect complement to just about any skin care routine. Besides the extensive list mentioned above, it is also helpful in boosting collagen production, plus the gentle anti-inflammatory nature of the niacinamide can potentially decrease the risk of irritation from other active ingredients you may be using, including conventional retinol and AHAs like glycolic acid.

What Does It Do For Your Skin?

Some ingredients are true skin care powerhouses and niacinamide is definitely on that list. Let’s explore it in more detail and see how adding this skin care superstar to your routine can help with your specific skin concerns.

Boosts Hydration

Niacinamide helps renew and restore skin's surface against moisture loss and dehydration.

When key fatty acids in the skin’s barrier gradually deplete, skin is left vulnerable to all sorts of problems, from dryness and flakiness to extra sensitivity. Niacinamide does an effective job of balancing the skin’s natural lipids to ensure this doesn’t happen.

Applying niacinamide has been shown to boost the hydrating ability of other moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, so the skin’s surface can better resist the moisture loss that leads to dryness and flaky texture. While it locks in moisture, it can simultaneously help keep pollutants out, making the skin both more hydrated and less sensitive.

Supports The Skin Moisture Barrier

Niacinamide helps bolster the skin barrier by increasing the amount of key lipids, called ceramides, in the skin’s outer layer. Ceramides improve moisture retention to help keep skin cells hydrated and plump, and better barrier function means less irritation from outside factors. This is why people with dry skin may benefit from regular topical application of niacinamide. Research shows that niacinamide may help the skin form a lipid barrier which can aid in moisture retention.

Evens Out And Brightens The Look Of Skin Tone

Board certified dermatologist Dr. Anar Mikailov says: “Niacinamide brightens your skin by inhibiting melanosome transfer. In some studies, it’s been shown to be only slightly less effective at skin brightening when compared to hydroquinone .... Niacinamide is much less irritating and more tolerable to most skin types as well.”

Excess melanin (skin pigment) can show up on the skin’s surface (stemming from sun exposure, pregnancy and aging, among other things), creating unwanted dark spots. Not only does niacinamide help inhibit the appearance of new discolorations, it can also lighten the look of existing ones. And because it plays so well with different ingredients, it can be used with other discoloration-reducing products, including all forms of Vitamin C, licorice root, conventional retinol and bakuchiol.

Minimizes The Appearance Of Pores

Niacinamide may minimize the appearance of pores by helping keep your skin smooth and clear. It may also help regulate the amount of oil your glands produce, which can prevent breakouts and clogged pores.

Refines The Appearance Of Texture And Fine Lines

Niacinamide also reduces the impact of environmental damage because of its ability to improve the skin’s barrier (its first line of defense). It also plays a role in helping skin to repair signs of past damage. Ignoring this type of daily damage can make skin appear older, dull and less radiant.

How To Incorporate Niacinamide Into Your Skin Care Routine

Niacinamide can be used twice daily on cleansed and moisturized skin. It can also be mixed with a serum and applied to the face and neck, because it pairs well with so many other ingredients. In many cases, niacinamide can actually amp up the benefits of other skin care ingredients, including antioxidants like Vitamin C, glycolic acids, conventional retinol or bakuchiol.

We created the new Bakuchiol + Niacinamide Collection with the versatility and benefits of niacinamide in mind. Featuring two products, the Bakuchiol + Niacinamide Moisturizer and the Radiant Protection SPF Fluid, this collection hydrates, minimizes pores and targets uneven texture to maintain luminous skin. A Natural Face Lift? Jade Roller & Gua Sha Benefits

A Natural Face Lift? Jade Roller & Gua Sha Benefits

Written By:

Thea Christie

You’ve seen them everywhere, but have you ever wondered whether tools like jade rollers and gua sha actually provide face lifting results that last? These two tools are popular with both professional beauty experts and at-home beauty trend followers alike, but the question is: What do these facial tools do, and do they even work? Read on to learn about these skin-enhancing tools, how to use them and the numerous benefits they provide — from facial massage and lifting to lymphatic drainage and skin plumping.

What Are Jade Rollers & Gua Sha Tools?

Jade rollers and gua sha are are tools that date back to seventh century China. They have been used for hundreds of years to help ease facial tension, reduce eye puffiness and improve lymphatic flow (aka moving stagnant waste fluids away from a tense or puffy area to be expelled from the body using massage and gentle pressure). These days, gua sha tools are commonly made of jade, as well as other high quality, pure and natural stones like rose quartz, green aventurine and amethyst, as well as other materials that are cooling and smooth against the skin like stainless steel and porcelain. The gua sha tool has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds of years for the aforementioned therapeutic benefits, as well as more recently for cosmetic benefits such as contouring and lifting the face and plumping the lips.

A jade roller is another face lifting device that dates back to ancient China. Made of jade like the name suggests (though they can be made from other stones as well), these tools are very accessible and easy to use. Simply move the natural face lift tool to the point on the face or neck you want to massage and roll it along the area. Several passes in one spot (under your eye toward your temple, for example) can help achieve the benefits. In comparison, gua sha requires more technique, so we’ve mapped out the steps below so you can learn which tool is best for you and how to get the most out of it.

Prepare Your Skin To Use A Gua Sha At Home

Before starting, prep the skin by applying a facial oil on the areas you want to massage, like your face and neck. Use a generous amount of oil, warming it up in your palms before pressing it into your skin. The Rosehip Triple C+E Firming Oil is a great choice for facial massage — it provides the “glide” you’ll need while also smoothing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles with essential fatty acids that improve the look of the skin’s texture. One happy customer, Lali P., reviewed the oil online saying: "Rosehip Firming Oil is one of my favs! Packed with great vitamins, it smooths and repairs the skin, making it look glowing and healthy."

Another luxurious option is our Facial Recovery Oil, which is suitable for all skin types. Often referred to as “liquid gold" by happy customers, this formula contains clary sage oil, olive oil and sage leaf extract, which improve the look of the skin while providing deep hydration. For a soft and bright complexion, the Camellia Glow Solid Face Oil with pink tourmaline gemstones is another highly moisturizing oil option. Marula oil and hemp seed oil hydrate the skin so that it appears smooth and supple.

Tutorial: How To Use Your Gua Sha & Jade Roller

You can learn to use these tools in the comfort of your own home by performing a self-guided face massage.

For The Jawline

To release any facial tension along your jaw and cheek area, glide your jade roller or gua sha tool along the jawline and across the cheeks. The gua sha tool might look a little more tricky to use because of its shape, so simply use the wider part to glide up from the base of the jawline to the top of the cheekbone. Repeat roughly five times on the first spot and then do the same on the other side of the face. You’re likely to feel relaxed, so you’re welcome to continue applying pressure for as long as you’re comfortable. Getting blood flowing is the ultimate goal, so if it feels good, keep going!

For The Neck

Many people experience neck strain thanks to office jobs and from too much time staring down at handheld devices. To help ease that tension, hold the tool of choice at an angle on your neck and slowly move up from the bottom of your neck (by your collarbone) toward your jawline. To help lymphatic drainage, work the tool from the ear all the way down the neck to the collarbone. Repeat until you feel tension release. The purpose of these repeated movements is to stimulate blood flow and relieve tightness in your neck.

For Puffy Eyes

To assist with puffiness around the eyes, gently glide the tool across the undereye area up to the temple until you reach the hairline. As with all of these techniques, repeat five to eight times, or until you feel relaxed. You can also cool the gua sha and jade roller in the freezer for a few minutes before you slide it over the area to further help reduce puffiness, swelling and inflammation.

For The Forehead

Now it’s time to move onto the forehead. For the gua sha tool, place the narrow end of the stone between the brow bone and the eyebrow and sweep from your eyebrows up until your hairline. Do the same for the jade roller repeatedly, gliding through from the corner of your eye to the temple to relieve the tension in the forehead. You can hold the tools still with some pressure on spots of tension before sweeping up to the hairline too.

For further instruction on all these techniques, watch our Lead Skin Care Trainer Natalie Pergar demonstrate a facial gua sha and jade rolling tutorial. .

Have you tried using these facial techniques and reaped the benefits? Let us know in the comments below or on social media! Or visit your nearest Eminence Organics Spa Partner and book an appointment for a gua sha facial!

What Is Retinol? Benefits, Side Effects & Natural Alternatives

Written By:

Libby Wright

Conventional retinol has long been a mainstay of skin care, finding its place in topical formulas that target the visible signs of aging. Unfortunately for some, the benefits of conventional retinol come with plenty of uncomfortable side effects. If you’re interested in finding out more about conventional retinol, but looking to avoid the side effects, you’ve come to the right place. Read on for our guide to conventional retinol in skin care and how to incorporate natural alternatives into your routine.

What Is Retinol?

Conventional retinol is a synthetic derivative of Vitamin A, an antioxidant that is essential for healthy eyes and skin. Because the body cannot produce this vitamin on its own, it needs to be supplied by diet and/or applied topically to the skin. It is often added to skin care products because of its ability to promote skin cell turnover, build collagen, fight free radicals and target fine lines and wrinkles.

How Does Retinol Work?

In order for the skin to benefit from retinol, enzymes in the body must convert it to retinoic acid (also known as tretinoin), the active form of Vitamin A. Retinoic acid works on a cellular level to optimize several functions that improve skin’s health and vitality. Among these functions:

Speeds Up Skin Cell Turnover

Efficient cell turnover is necessary for skin growth and repair. When you are a child, your skin cells naturally turn over every two weeks. However, as early as your twenties, the turnover process starts to slow to every 28-35 days. By fifty, it takes as long as 45-90 days for dead skin to fully shed from your skin’s surface. As a result, skin becomes drier, thinner and more pigmented. Conventional retinol prompts surface cells to turn over more quickly, enabling your skin to grow healthy cells and shed dead layers more efficiently.

Stimulates Collagen And Elastin Production

Over time, your skin’s stores of collagen and elastin — proteins that provide necessary support and elasticity to the skin — begin to deplete. Suddenly, skin starts looking less dense, plump and smooth. As the production of collagen and elastin declines, the skin begins to loosen and sag, and fine lines and wrinkles set in. Retinoic acid not only stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin, it also prevents their breakdown, helping your skin stay elastic (aka, able to bounce back).

Neutralizes Free Radicals

Ninety percent of skin aging is caused by environmental factors like pollution, blue light and UV rays. These stressors expose skin to free radicals — highly reactive molecules that cause oxidative stress and damage healthy skin cells. Unchecked, this can degrade the skin’s structural integrity and lead to premature aging. Conventional retinol's antioxidant properties neutralize free radicals and reduce their reactivity, thereby improving your skin’s resilience.

Retinol Benefits And Side Effects

Through these actions, conventional retinol provides the following benefits:

  • Removes dead skin cells
  • Clears congestion
  • Tightens pores
  • Smooths uneven skin texture
  • Minimizes the look of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Keeps skin firm and plump
  • Fades the appearance of dark spots

However, regular use of conventional retinol can cause the following side effects:

  • Dryness
  • Peeling
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Irritation
  • UV sensitivity

Most dermatologists advise that you skip conventional retinol if you suffer from rosacea, eczema, psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions. It’s also a no-go for sensitive skin and super dry complexions.

Conventional Retinol vs Retinol Alternatives

A Retinol Alternative

You can reap the benefits of conventional retinol (and skip its side effects) by opting for a natural, botanical-based alternative like bakuchiol. Bakuchiol is an extract derived from the leaves and seeds of the babchi plant. It has been used in Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines for hundreds of years, but has only recently been introduced to the modern skin care landscape.

A plant-based powerhouse, bakuchiol offers many of the same results as conventional retinol without the harsh side effects or concerns. It can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, help restore firmness, refine skin texture and even out the look of skin tone in a gentle yet effective way.

Benefits of Bakuchiol

Doesn’t Irritate

Peeling, redness and sensitivity are often associated with a topical retinoid. Bakuchiol is well tolerated by most skin types, including sensitive, and can be used day and night (conventional retinol should only come out after dark) because it doesn’t cause sun sensitivity, which is a major bonus.

Smooths The Look Of Fine Lines And Wrinkles

Clinical studies have demonstrated bakuchiol’s potential in minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Its ability to enhance cell turnover results in smoother and more even-looking skin by boosting elasticity and firmness. Incorporating bakuchiol into your skin care routine can help you achieve a youthful-looking and rejuvenated complexion.

Improves Firmness And Elasticity

As skin ages, it’s common for elasticity and firmness to decrease. This loss of elasticity can be caused by a reduced production of natural oils, pollution, oxidative stress from sun exposure and gravity. Studies have shown that, much like conventional retinol, bakuchiol can improve firmness and elasticity in the skin. Bakuchiol slows the breakdown of collagen and increases elasticity, giving you skin that looks firmer, plumper and tighter.

Evens Out Skin Tone

Uneven skin tone can show up in a number of ways. Hyperpigmentation that shows up as blotchiness, dark spots or uneven texture can be caused by sun damage, melasma and acne scarring. Conventional retinol is often suggested as a way to fade the appearance of dark spots — though it can be a slow process and irritating to the skin. Bakuchiol can be a safer alternative to conventional retinol for people looking to even out their skin tone. It will help encourage cell turnover without causing irritation.

Suitable For All Skin Types

As mentioned, bakuchiol is generally well tolerated by all skin types. Whether you have oily, dry, sensitive skin or some combination, this is an ingredient that will almost certainly work for you. Like with all new ingredients, it makes sense to start out slow and see how your skin reacts, but it’s safe to say that chances are, your skin will love it and you will love the results!

How To Add Natural Retinol To Your Skin Care Routine

If you’re liking the sound of this plant-based retinol alternative, our new Bakuchiol + Niacinamide Collection might be exactly what your skin needs. We have created two new products that lean into the benefits of bakuchiol as well as another major skin care multitasker, niacinamide. A form of Vitamin B3, niacinamide helps lock in hydration, minimizes large pores, improves the look of uneven skin tone, softens the appearance of fine lines and visibly brightens the skin. Like we said, a major multitasker.

The new collection includes two products, a moisturizer and an SPF fluid that introduce a combination of ingredients designed to hydrate, replenish and protect your skin, while revealing a soft, smooth complexion.

Our Bakuchiol + Niacinamide Moisturizer will help restore your skin's natural hydration and minimize the look of fine lines and wrinkles. This gel cream moisturizer is formulated with the combination of retinol alternative bakuchiol and niacinamide, plus hydrating panthenol. This trio helps to smooth wrinkles while visibly firming skin and minimizing the look of large pores and uneven texture with no visible irritation.

For daytime, we recommend adding the Radiant Protection SPF Fluid, an all mineral SPF that helps protect skin from the harsh effects of the sun while smoothing the look of fine lines and wrinkles. With a hydrating, nourishing feel and dewy finish, this SPF keeps skin looking ageless while offering broad spectrum SPF 30 protection for combination to dry skin.

Natural Retinol Alternative

Another way to enjoy the benefits of conventional retinol (and skip the side effects) is with products that contain our proprietary Natural Retinol Alternative. This formulation is derived from chicory root and tara tree extract, two natural compounds that help create a complex that mimics the effect of conventional retinol by appearing to lift and tighten the skin. If you're looking to add another retinol-like ingredient to your skin care routine, our Natural Retinol Alternative improves skin firmness and elasticity while minimizing the visible signs of aging.

One of our favorite products with Natural Retinol Alternative, the Monoi Age Corrective Exfoliating Cleanser, is infused with exotic monoi and finely ground olive seeds. This refining cleanser rejuvenates skin for lifted appearance. It also removes impurities and surface debris to encourage the appearance of smooth-looking skin.

You can also add a retinol-free treatment step to your skin care routine by using the Bamboo Firming Fluid. This silky concentrate, formulated with our Natural Retinol Alternative, smooths the look of fine lines and wrinkles and tightens the skin. Bamboo and coconut are additional ingredients that tone and condition for a complexion that appears firm and ageless.

Eminence Organics customer and fan, Judy, says in her five-star review: “I'm absolutely in love with this product. The formula is incredibly lightweight and absorbs quickly, leaving my skin feeling soft, supple and well-hydrated. I have noticed a significant improvement in the firmness and texture of my skin, especially around my eye area. Fine lines and wrinkles have become less noticeable, and my complexion looks brighter and more radiant.”

For best results, apply the Bamboo Firming Fluid after your favorite toner and before moisturizing your skin. Like all Eminence Organic Skin Care products, a little goes a long way! A thin layer is plenty to keep your skin soft, smooth and wrinkle-free.

How To Prevent Fine Lines And Wrinkles Before They Happen

Written By:

Libby Wright

As the saying goes, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” And when it comes to taking care of your skin, this advice is spot on. While there are many products designed to replenish skin and repair damage, it’s also true that the less damage there is, the less you’ll need to repair. So how do you prevent these signs of aging from happening in the first place? And can you reverse wrinkles once they’ve appeared? Read on to to find out.

Protect Your Skin From The Sun | Cleanse Daily | Retinols And Retinol Alternatives | Hydrate | Don't Forget The Eyes | Eat Well And Exercise

Protect Your Skin From The Sun Every Day

Sun damage is the number one cause of premature aging, period. From rough, uneven texture to blotchiness, sagging skin, dark patches and wrinkles, sun exposure in the form of UVA and UVB rays shows up on the skin and robs it of its glow. And since these pesky rays exist everywhere and year-round (yes, even on the cloudiest winter days), we are all susceptible to this type of damage. Lucky for us, there are products designed to help mitigate the fallout.

Though often overlooked, SPF is literally the most important and effective anti-aging product out there. Thankfully, it is available in so many different forms these days, so there’s an option out there that’s suitable for any skin type or preference. Chemical and physical sunscreens can be found in creams, oils, fluids and powders — so there are zero excuses. A broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher is a must, and reapplying throughout the day, especially when spending time outdoors, is the best way to stay protected. Another way to keep the rays from wreaking havoc on your skin is to cover up with sun-protective clothing — like lightweight and long-sleeved shirts, long pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection.

Take a look at our new Radiant Protection SPF Fluid. This lightweight yet nourishing formula glides on effortlessly for a dewy, hydrated finish.

Bonus Tip: Apply self-tanner if you’re looking for a little color. Every tan is actually caused by sun damage and prematurely ages your skin. This is true whether you get your tan from the sun or an indoor tanning bed. Both emit harmful UV rays that accelerate the aging process. Oh, and your hands are not immune. If you’re into gel nails, the UV light used to cure the color is the same UV light you get in tanning beds. So slather on the SPF before you hit the nail salon.

Cleanse Daily, But Gently

While removing your makeup, SPF, sweat and environmental pollutants like dirt, dust and smoke is essential, using too much pressure when scrubbing your skin clean can cause irritation. And skin irritation accelerates skin aging. Gentle washing is more than sufficient when looking to get rid of the dirt, sweat and grime.

If a deeper clean is what you’re after, choose a cleanser with gentle physical and/or chemical exfoliants built in. They will give you that squeaky clean feel without harsh scrubbing. Plus, many exfoliants help reduce the signs of aging, so you’re getting major bang for your buck. Some of our favorite gentle-yet-effective options include our Mangosteen Daily Resurfacing Cleanser, Monoi Age Corrective Exfoliating CleanserCharcoal Exfoliating Gel Cleanser or a few sprinkles of the Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant or Stone Crop Oxygenating Fizzofoliant into any cleanser of your choice. Website reviewer, Penny, raves about our stone crop formula, calling it: “The best exfoliant I’ve ever used!”

And if a morning cleanse isn’t part of your ritual, it might be time to add that step. Cleansing the skin before applying your daytime products will help them absorb better and, shocker, work better!

Retinols And Retinol Alternatives

Retinoids are compounds that are derived from Vitamin A and are known for their ability to improve skin texture and minimize the appearance of wrinkles. Conventional retinol (one form of retinoid) is a powerful but harsh ingredient that can help strengthen the protective function of the outermost layer of the skin, limit water loss and even protect collagen — a protein that offers structural support to the skin (aka holds it up to prevent sagging and wrinkles). It doesn’t happen overnight, but conventional retinol may ease fine lines and wrinkles and tackle other signs of aging.

While retinols are a big deal in the skin care world, they’re not for everybody. All of the upside comes at a price, usually in the form of redness, irritation and peeling. Lucky for us, bakuchiol has entered the chat and is changing the game. Touted as an effective and natural alternative to conventional retinol, this plant-based powerhouse offers many of the same results as retinol, without the downsides. Extracted from the leaves and seeds of the babchi plant, bakuchiol is a gentle alternative that can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, help restore firmness, refine skin texture and even out skin tone in a gentle yet effective way.

Hydrate, Hydrate And Hydrate Some More

Moisture is key when it comes to staving off lines and wrinkles. And, great news, there’s a multi-pronged approach to hydration that will literally benefit your skin from the inside out. Drinking plenty of water is super important to the health of your skin — it helps maintain that glowing look by providing elasticity and plumpness. Dehydration can lead to dry patches, which can leave skin looking dull. And if plain water is getting a little boring, lots of fruits and vegetables are super hydrating: Watermelon, cucumbers, peppers and apples are all high in water — and full of skin-friendly vitamins — so hit the produce aisles.

Moisturizers are a no-brainer when it comes to hydration, yet they’re not always top of mind in our routines. Between serums, toners and SPF, sometimes the simple-yet-mighty moisturizer gets forgotten. An easy fix is a product that does double-duty, like the Bright Skin Moisturizer SPF 40 or the Bakuchiol + Niacinamide Moisturizer. Adding this quick step to your routine will take seconds but could take years off the look of your skin. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide are hydration powerhouses.

Don’t Forget The Eyes

Another simple step that can help prevent the look of fine lines and wrinkles is the addition of an eye cream. The delicate skin under the eyes needs a little extra TLC, which is why a product designed specifically for the area can be the preemptive step you need in your life. Try the Marine Flower Peptide Eye Cream or the Hibiscus Ultra Lift Eye Cream. As well as helping to prevent or slow down the formation of lines and wrinkles in the area, these two formulas incorporate ingredients that can reduce the look of puffiness and darkening, while helping to rejuvenate that thin skin.

Eat Well, Drink Well And Exercise

We touched on it earlier, but what you put inside your body plays a big role in how your skin looks on the outside. A well-balanced diet that includes vitamin and antioxidant-rich produce, minimal sugar, few simple carbs, lots of skin-friendly healthy fats (olive oil, avocados, salmon, nuts and seeds), plus clean protein sources like grass-fed beef, eggs and beans should make up the majority of your meals. Sugary drinks and alcohol can dehydrate the skin and make it look older than its years, as can processed foods (think anything that comes in a package or has a shelf life longer than your last relationship), so keep those to a minimum. But we don’t suggest cutting them all out altogether. Food and drinks, especially shared with friends, can bring a lot of joy — and that shows on your skin too. Just try to be mindful about indulging in moderation.

Another important part of a healthy lifestyle that will help your overall glow is exercise. Even moderate exercise can improve circulation and boost the immune system. This, in turn, may give the skin a more youthful appearance. Plus, you can’t beat that natural glow and the flush to your cheeks that a good workout brings.

It’s never too early (or too late!) to start taking care of your skin and help slow the aging process. Adding products like moisturizers, sunscreen, exfoliants and peels, and leaning into ingredients like antioxidants, peptides, bakuchiol and hyaluronic acid, can go a long way to help support the structure, strength and elasticity of your skin. Replacing processed foods with fresh, healthy options, drinking lots of water and limiting alcohol can all be part of the equation.

A Bakuchiol And Niacinamide Skin Care Routine For Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Written By:

With kids heading back to school and the leaves changing color, fall is all about new beginnings. And since we're on the topic of fresh starts, the introduction of a new skin care ritual can be a welcome change. While autumn marks the end of the glowy, sunny days of summer, there’s no reason the radiance of the past few months can’t be extended into the fall. With that in mind, we introduce our new Bakuchiol + Niacinamide Collection, a powerful combination of ingredients designed to hydrate, restore and protect your skin.

What Is Bakuchiol? | What Is Niacinamide? | Dry Skin Routine | Combination Skin Routine | Oily Skin Routine | Normal Skin Routine | Sensitive Skin Routine | Watch The Routine

What Is Bakuchiol?

Bakuchiol is an extract derived from the leaves and seeds of the babchi plant, which has been used in Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines for hundreds of years to help heal, calm and soothe the skin, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. What makes bakuchiol so exciting in the world of skin care is that it mimics conventional retinol in a number of ways.

A quick refresher: Conventional Retinol is a form of vitamin A with many applications in skin care. It helps unclog pores, exfoliates skin and increases collagen production, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and give skin a fresh, plump appearance, among many other benefits. It’s a powerful and effective ingredient. Unfortunately, it can be harsh on the skin. Side effects like peeling, redness, itching, burning and dry skin are common. And while many of these uncomfortable issues are temporary, those with sensitive skin should stay away. Conventional retinol also makes skin super photosensitive, meaning that not only should it be used exclusively at night; any sun exposure after retinol application can cause burns and other skin irritation.

This is why bakuchiol is such a game-changer. This retinol alternative includes all the benefits of conventional retinol (minimizing pores and inflammation, increased collagen production, exfoliation, improved appearance of lines and wrinkles) without the negative side effects. Not only does this plant extract reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, refine skin texture and even out skin tone in a gentle yet effective way, it can be used day and night, without the peeling and redness associated with conventional retinol.

What Is Niacinamide?

In the context of skin care, niacinamide is a topical version of Vitamin B3. Used as an active ingredient in many products, this water-soluble vitamin has a number of functions including helping to lock in hydration, minimizing the look of large pores, improving uneven skin tone, softening the appearance of fine lines, brightening skin, regulating oil production, strengthening a weak barrier and boosting cell-building proteins in the skin. In other words, it’s a major skin care multitasker.

Bakuchiol and niacinamide are a power couple — and they're even stronger and more effective when used together. So it made sense to combine the two for this new collection. Read on to find out more about the new Eminence Organics products hitting shelves and how they can work in skin care routines. We’ve broken it down by skin type and created a ritual designed just for your needs.

A Fall Routine For Your Skin Type With Bakuchiol And Niacinamide

We all have different skin concerns. Whether you’re dealing with excessive oil, sensitive skin or an overly dry complexion, your skin will benefit from different products and ingredients. Both bakuchiol and niacinamide are well tolerated by all skin types and can be combined with other ingredients for optimal results. Jump to your skin type to discover a fall routine that is tailored to your skin's specific needs.

Dry Skin Routine

If your skin is dry, you’re a great candidate for bakuchiol. As mentioned, it boasts many of the same benefits as conventional retinol but without the peeling, drying and irritation. And niacinamide is a major hydrator, making it another no-brainer for dry skin.

Cleanser

Start with the Firm Skin Acai Cleanser to help hydrate dry skin, thanks to hyaluronic acid and seabuckthorn oil. And because it’s a cream cleanser, it will leave the skin feeling hydrated, noticeably smoother and revitalized.

Toner

Spray Neroli Age Corrective Hydrating Mist directly on to the face and neck, leaving the skin feeling clear, fresh and ready to absorb the rest of your skin care.

Concentrate

The bamboo and coconut ingredients found in the Bamboo Firming Fluid deeply hydrate the skin with the help of a Natural Retinol Alternative and Swiss Green Apple Stem Cells.

Moisturizer

The Bakuchiol + Niacinamide Moisturizer smooths wrinkles while visibly firming skin and minimizing large pores and uneven texture with no irritation. And its lightweight gel cream formula leaves skin feeling soft and hydrated.

Eye Cream

Apply the versatile Marine Flower Peptide Eye Cream day and night to provide long-lasting hydration and visibly improve the appearance of wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles.

SPF

Last and definitely not least (aka, the step you can’t skip): Our new Radiant Protection SPF Fluid is an all mineral sunscreen that helps protect skin from the harsh effects of the sun while smoothing the look of fine lines and wrinkles. With a hydrating, nourishing feel and dewy finish, this SPF keeps skin looking ageless while offering broad spectrum SPF 30 protection, perfect for combination skin.

Combination Skin Routine

Your skin is a bit of a mixed bag, which is why a routine tailored especially for combo skin is super important. This one has been designed with your unique needs in mind.

Cleanser

Mix a small amount of Mangosteen Daily Resurfacing Cleanser with water in hands, apply and massage gently with fingertips in a circular motion covering the face and neck areas for a clear, smooth and radiant complexion.

Toner

Energize and revitalize the skin with a couple of sprays of the Mangosteen Revitalizing Mist on your face and neck. You’ll get a dose of potent antioxidants and skin will feel energized, pores will look minimized.

Serum

Firm and tighten the appearance of your skin with the Cornflower Recovery Serum. Just a few drops applied to your face and neck will leave you hydrated but not oily.

Moisturizer

Our new Bakuchiol + Niacinamide Moisturizer is a lightweight gel cream formulated with the unique combination of bakuchiol and niacinamide to restore skin's natural hydration. This pairing smooths wrinkles while visibly firming skin and minimizing large pores and uneven texture with no irritation.

Eye Cream

The Hibiscus Ultra Lift Eye Cream de-puffs tired eyes, smooths wrinkles and minimizes the appearance of dark undereye circles. The cooling, stainless steel rollerball applicator massages hibiscus and ice wine actives into the areas around the eye, appearing to instantly tighten and lift the skin.

SPF

Our new Radiant Protection SPF Fluid is an all mineral sunscreen that helps protect skin from the harsh effects of the sun while smoothing the look of fine lines and wrinkles. With a hydrating, nourishing feel and dewy finish, this SPF keeps skin looking ageless while offering broad spectrum SPF 30 protection perfect for combination skin.

Oily Skin Routine

Oily skin can be a blessing and a curse. Products containing oil can add to the shiny slickness of it, but you don’t want to dry it out completely either. It’s a delicate balance, and we’ve created a routine to help achieve that.

Cleanser

The Clear Skin Probiotic Cleanser is a clarifying cream gel cleanser that treats oily and problem skin with cucumber and tea tree oil. Sweet almond milk and yogurt reduce the visible signs of problem skin and breakouts without stripping the skin of moisture.

Toner

Tropical and vibrant, the Pineapple Refining Tonique smells like fresh pineapple juice! This daily formula combines gentle bromelain and PHA to exfoliate all skin types, including sensitive. Chemical exfoliation may sound daunting, but PHA and bromelain are gentle enough to get the job done without irritation.

Serum

Apply a thin layer of the Eight Greens Youth Serum over the entire face to help hydrate the skin without adding any oil.

Moisturizer

The Bakuchiol + Niacinamide Moisturizer works well for all skins, smoothing wrinkles while visibly firming skin and minimizing large pores and uneven texture with no irritation. However, oily skin types may prefer the Echinacea Recovery Cream, which hydrates the skin and reduces the visible signs of aging. If a lighter application is more suited to your skin, emulsify a small amount in your hand with a few drops of water before applying over the entire face.

Eye Cream

A thin layer of the Neroli Age Corrective Eye Serum will help the epidermis appear tighter and firmer while increasing moisture levels around the eyes. This is a favorite among customers. Website reviewer CTay calls it “Epic! Best eye cream ever," saying it “solves all problems and looks great under makeup. The best. Eyes look so youthful after using this. Will use this forever! You won't regret it.”

SPF

Protect skin with this broad-spectrum UVA and UVB SPF, enhanced with Vitamin C-rich lilikoi (aka passionfruit). The Lilikoi Daily Defense Moisturizer SPF 40 uses zinc oxide to provide sun protection. This formula also contains cocoa seed extract and satsuma mandarin peel, which helps improve the look of skin exposed to environmental stressors like blue light and pollution. Perfect year-round, which is exactly when you should be wearing SPF!

Normal Skin Routine

Just because your skin is labeled “normal” doesn’t mean it requires less attention. Sure, it may not break out without warning or react to any new products you try, but it still needs to be treated with special care.

Cleanser

Start with the Monoi Age Corrective Exfoliating Cleanser, a gentle exfoliating cleanser that not only removes dirt, oil and makeup, but also helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It combines physical and chemical exfoliation to help refine skin’s texture, and it washes away impurities and removes surface debris.

Toner

Spray Neroli Age Corrective Hydrating Mist directly on to face and neck, for skin that feels clear and fresh and ready to absorb the rest of your skin care.

Serum

Apply a thin layer of the Firm Skin Acai Booster-Serum over the entire face and your skin will appear firmer, revitalized and plump, while signs of aging are visibly reduced.

Moisturizer

Our new Bakuchiol + Niacinamide Moisturizer is a lightweight gel cream formulated with powerful combination of bakuchiol and niacinamide. This pairing smooths wrinkles while visibly firming skin and minimizing large pores and uneven texture with no irritation.

Eye Cream

Apply the versatile Marine Flower Peptide Eye Cream day and night to provide long-lasting hydration and visibly improve the appearance of wrinkles, puffiness and dark circles.

SPF

Our new Radiant Protection SPF Fluid is an all mineral sunscreen with broad spectrum protection. Made with a combination of bakuchiol and niacinamide, this hydrating fluid helps smooth the look of fine lines and wrinkles and provides a dewy finish.

Sensitive Skin Routine

Treating sensitive skin requires a little extra TLC. Lucky for you, the new Bakuchiol + Niacinamide Collection was designed with your skin type in mind.

Cleanser

Pump a small amount of Kombucha Foaming Cleanser to transform the liquid into a lightweight foam. Apply to skin and massage gently with fingertips in a circular motion then rinse.

Essence

It’s all about balance with sensitive skin and the Kombucha Microbiome Balancing Essence works harmoniously to enhance the appearance of luminosity and gently primes the skin ahead of your full skin care ritual. Dispense a small amount of product in your hands or on a cotton pad and pat it onto cleansed and toned skin, leave on and your skin will be nourished, hydrated and primed for the next steps.

Oil

The Facial Recovery Oil is a toning and hydrating oil created with precious herbs and nourishing oils to renew sensitive and aging skin. This is a luxurious facial oil, nicknamed “liquid gold” by some of our more passionate customers.

Moisturizer

A lightweight gel cream, the new Bakuchiol + Niacinamide Moisturizer is formulated with the unique combination of bakuchiol and niacinamide to help smooth wrinkles while visibly firming skin and minimizing the look of large pores and uneven texture with no irritation.

Eye Cream

Gently apply a thin layer of the Bearberry Eye Repair Cream to the eye contour area until absorbed. This ultra-hydrating eye cream with bioactive ingredients hydrates and nourishes the appearance of the skin around the fragile eye contour area. Meadow eyebright, hop and bearberry help to reduce the visible signs of aging.

SPF

Finally, our new Radiant Protection SPF Fluid is a hydrating all mineral sunscreen that helps protect skin from the harsh effects of the sun while smoothing the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Its nourishing feel and dewy finish help keeps skin looking ageless while offering broad spectrum SPF 30 protection.

Watch and learn how to achieve the ageless skin you crave with the help of our new Bakuchiol + Niacinamide Collection:
